On the 18th October I paid my annual visit/pilgrimage to Barry Topp's New Forest Cider Emporium at Burley in the heart of the forest. Quite an adventure getting there as it involved 3 bus journeys with 3 different companies. Whilst there I met up with Roy Bailey of Lamborne Valley Cider and shortly after we met up with Rose Grant of 'Cider by Rosie' and then Barry joined us with a bottle of Australian Perry, very nice it was too. Here a few of the photos I took.
Shovelling the apples for the Workman press in the background.
Robey portable driving the old Victorian Workman press.
Pressing the manual way. Certainly looks hard work.
Three cider makers in a row. Rose, Barry and Roy.
We were entertained by the 'Plonkers' Agricultural Orchestra playing Moo-sic. Note the antlers behind the wood stove.
The bottle of beer on the canopy was from Bath Ales, not Double Diamond unfortunately.
Hurdle maker. There were quite a few country crafts there including a pole lathe.
Miniature working threshing set complete with baler.
A very good day which ended with me taking home a gallon of dry after sampling a few first. |
