Does that not look a practical way to move stuff around wetlands ?

It's hard for us nowadays with our modern road and rail based transport, to fully grasp that in the past most things here moved by water, or by sledges. Big farm wagons (a bit like the Indian ox-cart that really needs it's wobbly wheels) had difficulties in wet saturated ground.
The King's Highway was originally just that; it was the higher road that stayed mostly passable all year long.
