|I've suddenly had around forty odd of my eight and nine year old apple trees go down with canker. Parts of the trees that have blossomed and leafed up have suddenly died.
Today I need to prune them back vigorously and cut out every infected part and get the pruning's burnt straight away.
I think the problem is caused by a spore and it can spread if left unchecked.
It's not something that I've encountered before and its probably flared up due to the strange weather that we've been having. It's been extremely wet here and then we've had hot weather for the last few weeks.
My eldest son and a friend are going to muck in and lend a hand this morning.
I've been advised to dip my pruners into meths after each and every cut.
