Have you noticed how the price if sugar has decreased?

39p in Lidl last week.

Last time I was making jams and pickles it was around 70p.

The preserving pan is going to be out for a fair while yet methinks.......

D'you know ? I was just thinking the same thing yesterday. Honestly at this rate it'll be three for soon.

I've still got apples to use up, so I bought more sugar today, but the temptation to hoard the stuff   is unbelievable.

When my Granny died and we cleared out her back press, there were over seventy jars of jam and down the bottom were four full big glass sweetie jars  packed with sugar. After the war she said she'd never go without again. I think comparatively speaking that sugar has never been cheaper.

Keep it dry and it never goes off either. Seal in an airtight container (mylar bag) and forget it. Many beekeepers I know are doing just that. Two years ago it was 1 a kilo.

This chart seems to suggest hoarding is a good idea.
The low price was a few weeks ago and it is on the rise now.

Thanks for the timely reminder. With what's left of this years apple crop, we 're going to make a small barrels of cider this weekend. We'll use its contents to top up the main barrels when we rack them off.

You always lose the bottom four inches of a barrel when you rack it off. The last bit is always quite thick and cloudy with sediment. To keep your cider, you need the barrel topped right to the top to keep the air out.

Anyway, back to the sugar theme. We're going to add loads of sugar to this last small barrel so that it ferments out at around 10%  and instead of topping the barrels up with water, we'll use the strong stuff. I've got to go into town later on, so I'll buy a couple of quids worth of sugar from Lidl.
