I had a look at this section because it dealt with planting an apple orchard but then went on to look at the whole website and saw that it dealt with a great deal more. I think you'll agree that it was well worth the effort.

I wish that there was something like this in my area that I could get involved in. I'll make a note of this place and hope that the oportunity to visit comes up.
I prefer the company of like minded people when I'm doing something rather than just that of my own. For instance, I wish I could find an apple enthusiast.

He's right about the Howgate Wonder as a cooking apple tree - I've got one and the apples are a class apart.

Makes you wonder why so many apple trees fell out of fashion - commercial growers wanting heavier croppers being the reason that comes to mind first.

Try "stephenhayesuk" on utube,Bodger he is without doubt a likeminded soul. I have found his Apple grafting video's very easy to follow,and have now done many sucsessful grafts myself.I think he is also into Cider making, and shows his own set up.

I have an old 2 acre orchard myself.The original trees were planted in 1924, they are now showing their age, but still manage to fill a few pies.

There are, in the orchard a few Lincolnshire varieties of apples which i think is nice.

I totaly agree with Christine, Howgate Wonder is a fantastic Cooker.The apples grow to a massive size.I too only have one Tree,but have taken grafting material off it the last two winters and over worked an old tree.So far the grafts have made plenty of growth but have not as yet borne any fruit.Hopefully more Pies for the future.
