Bdooly weather ! I've been picking apples all week ready for a big apple pressing session today but so far, rain is definitely stopping play. The best laid plans of mice and men eh? The cider making will have to wait until another day! I'm a fair weather fisherman and cider maker.

The weather hasn't been kind to us today, but today, Blind Pugh and I pressed 55 gallons of apple juice that's destined to be cider. We hope to press the same again this coming weekend.

OOooh ....... time is obviously pressing.
Have you thought of opening up the press room for visitors who may be interested in the spectacle of the process?
Sample sessions of the finished product and sale of the finished article too.

Mart, I'm only licenced to sell cider from my home address for 21 days a year. I turn those days into 10 weekends over the summer when there are lots of holiday makers in the area.
Everyone  more or less gets a guided tour of the pigs, orchards and cider room and that's whether they want one or not. It gives me a little bit of kudos and definitely encourages sales.

Just to add that we used a hydrometer on our freshly pressed apple juice and the resulting cider should come out at around 6.7% ABV.

6.7% is fine but I expected it to be a little bit stronger. I used plenty of cider apples in the mix but a fair proportion of eaters and cookers were also added. With it being fairly late in the season, I expected there to be quite a lot of sugar in the apples, which should have lead to a slightly stronger cider.
It will be interesting to see what strength we get this coming weekend, when we'll be pressing a similar quantity of apples but on this occasion all the apples we'll be using will be cider varieties.

Last nights heavy winds and rain will see lots of apples on the floor this morning.
I'll be picking windfalls on and off throughout the day. Bending over under the trees picking apples makes for back aching and pretty warm work and that's why I do it in stages.
I picked about 100kg yesterday and they're all going towards the weekends major pressing.

Well today will see the last major pressing of our season. I've collected lots of apples over the week and now we're ready to go. We've still got a few apples on the tree but perhaps not enough for another full barrel.

I've got 3 trees left to pick then that's it. Will probably get them done tomorrow.

No rain today, if anything, its too hot and sunny. I've nipped indoors to make Kaz a cup of tea and I'm sweltering.

It's thick fog here, can hardly see the trees! Forecast to get better later though.
