This is probably the same view that Robert Kett had of the Cow Tower on 21st of July 1549 just before he stormed the city of Norwich, which was the major offensive of the Kett's rebellion

This area of Lionwood and Quebec Rd Waterworks is going to look Bloomin' good in a few weeks time.

Cobwebs on the ceiling of a mediaeval undercroft. This room is 880 years old, and I hope those cobwebs aren't, because they are directly above where we have the mixing desk for the Friday night Acoustic sessions in Jurnets Bar.

This is Tom Richardson's Memorial chair amongst the Daffodils in Cowholme Meadow. Many of my local Facebook friends will be familiar with Uncle Stash, which was Tom's band, and I for one miss seeing Tom perform.

I have taken the liberty of adding a couple of extra photos of "Tom's Chair" below because I think that it is a lovely lump of wood.

Another fine piece of sculpture in Norwich.

Blackthorn in bloom by the River Wensum just before sunset at the Bishops Bridge. That is actually one of my favourite fishing spots, and it is not really that difficult to access. Can you see the "H" in the brick work just to the left of the Blackthorn? that is two flights of steps down from the road above, and then continuing to the left there is a hidden (from this view) 6-8 feet wide paved footpath that is about 2 feet below the level of the greenery and soil of the river bank... if you look carefully you can make out the row of fence posts running alongside the path. The tree 2nd from the left in this photo is also the tree that I fell out of 7 years ago resulting in me dislocating my knee (again!). http://overthegate.myfreeforum.org/about6060

2015 a photo a day project 27/03/2015

Someone has put this dummy plastic Owl on the fence between the bottom of their garden and Lionwood................... it's head moves in the breeze but it doesn't deter the birds in the slightest.

Yeah, BST (DST) has arrived!

Amazing photos! Am really enjoying this virtual tour of where you live. I think the spire at sunset is an excellent shot. ... Well... They are all really good actually! Thanks for doing this, Gareth.

1st of April to 15th of April 15.

Quayside on the River Wensum in Norwich. This area has been a quay since Medieval times and possibly longer. Nowadays it is a fashionable and sought after residential area, and these metal banded pieces of wood representing boxes and bales of goods either recently unloaded, or about to be loaded on to Wherries or other shallow draft vessels are the only reminder of times long passed.

Looking out across the top of Norwich market place from inside the City Sheriff's office in the Guildhall. I think they should at the very least clean the windows ready for when I next visit.

The Jarold's Bridge over the River Wensum at St James Quarter, Norwich. I am unsure if I actually like Corten steel work or not, as it has been intentionally made to rust rather than receive a protective coating or paint.

Rainwater run-off riverlet remains of leaf litter, Birch and Sycamore seeds, Beechnut and Hazelnut shells, and Acorn cups from last weeks storm squall.

The clock above the transept side door on Norwich Cathedral. I rather like the elegance in the detail of this clock.

This metal sculpture gives you the name of 70's prog rock band, but its actual location will also give you the name of one of their most popular albums.

Should twenty thousand Dragons rise, I'd fight them before your eyes! And now I'll slay the Dragon. My wonders to begin. A fell and fiery dragon he, but I will clip his wings.

This is one of my favourites of the many plaques dotted about the city, and this one can be found on the wall of the approach to the castle.

Recently I've been wandering around the city at night with my camera, and I must admit that I am enjoying trying to judge and then capture the light just right to make the picture.

The Peregrine Falcon viewing point in the Cathedral Close is now well up and running. I highly recommend you give this a go if you should find yourself in Norwich over the next few weeks, Viking have sponsored this view point on behalf of the Hawk and Owl trust, and you get the opportunity to view the falcons through some very high quality optics.

Movie Monday in Caley's Cocoa Cafe
Keith ("the Beehive") and I, and if Lois' day off coincides have tea and cake at Caley's cafe and watch old movie reels graciously provided by Norwich Heart. I walked in today just after 3.15pm and lo and behold what do I see projected on to the wall, but an old movie reel of an unmanned, manually operated, hand cranked, chain ferry crossing the river.... this is something that I have recently been campaigning for; a free to use on demand unmanned, manually operated chain ferry, and the powers that be said that a chain ferry would be completely unsuitable..... but only because two rival commercial fare paying ferry services were approved, licensed, and have now set up. An adult fare is £3.00 per person one way across the river.... Well, it is actually cheaper to drive around and park up at the pay and display than it is to buy one adult ticket, let alone the cost of a family crossing ticket!

This how we should be able to cross the river from Thorpe St Andrew to Whittlingham country park By a Chain Ferry

This is the iconic view of the Norwich skyline that many people have captured. On the left is St Peter Mancroft and the Forum, The clock tower of city hall, the (CofE) Cathedral and on the far right is the of tower St Giles looking as though it is attached to St John's (RC) Cathedral.

I took this photo from the view point adjacent to Café Britannia.

15th of April until 30th of April 2015

Scaffolding and repair works on the Cathedral. Something like this is almost constantly going on, and even though you get a feeling of permanence from such a large and imposing building, it is in an almost constant need of maintenance and repair.

The Royal on Bank Plain in the foreground and the castle in the back ground. Can you see the car on the left hand side in front of the old prison wall at the castle? That is the position from where I took the photo of Britannia barracks and Cafe Britannia on 31/03/2015. So it was only right that this photo was taken with me leaning on the railings at Britannia café.

Guerilla Gardening today.
I have 300g of Poppy Seeds and 50g of Wild flower seeds to sow. I have chosen 4 locations all of which are within easy foraging distance for my Bees. This is part of my WW1 centenary tribute, and hopefully there will be an excellent germination rate that will give a really good showing.

This is what was the Victorian Duke's Palace bridge that spanned the River Wensum at Duke Street Norwich. It is now one of the view points of the castle gardens over looking the city of Norwich. It is also directly over the entrance to the castle mall car park, but it has actually been re-assembled incorrectly and apparently I am the only person who thinks that..... no-one else seems to be able to see the mistake ............... can you spot the error in the architecture?

The Crooked Spire of Chesterfield: "In common folklore, there are numerous explanations as to why the spire is twisted. One well established legend goes that a virgin once married in the church, and the church was so surprised that the spire turned around to look at the bride, and continues that if another virgin marries in the church, the spire will return to true again."

Stalagmites and Stalactites in Treak Cliff Cavern, Castleton Derbyshire. I first saw this formation on a school trip as a 12 year old, some 41 years ago and in the great scheme of things there has been about a 0.010" of closing in the gap between the stalactite and stalagmite in the centre of this photo during that time, and in about another 5000 years or so they just may touch.

2015 a photo a day project, 09/05/2015

The puppy sculpture in Chesterfield's Theatre Yard (once known as “the kennels”) designed by Geoff Woods from Working pArts. It is solid glass, and the skill in the actual moulding to start with is excellent, but the real skill was in the cooling of such a large piece of glass as there are only a couple of minor flaws visible.

If you are going to write graffiti upon a wall, then let it be a whole book!

This building has been scheduled for demolition to make way for a new residential development and in the summer of 2006 an artist undertook the project of copying out Eutopia by Thomas Moore on to these walls. In a few weeks time this building will have been demolished under the Norwich City Council 10 year rule. If a building has remained empty or site un-developed for 10 years  then the council issue a compulsory purchase order to the value of the property of 10 years ago, and then go ahead and redevelop the site themselves... and this system works!

Newly Hatched Cygnets.
The swans decided to nest on a low lying section of built up silt bank not far off the city centre and in a very popular pedestrian area. A higher than normal spring tide could have easily washed the nest and eggs away. There was not signs of any cygnets on Sunday afternoon, with the Penn firmly sat on the nest, and the Cobb in a mean mood patrolling up and down the river for about 20 metres in either direction. Yesterday afternoon at about 4.30pm there were these 4 hatchlings visible, and It took me 20 minutes or so of waiting to get this photo, and I am absolutely certain the Cygnets have not been on the water yet.

This little Blue Tit fledged from the nest in our Leylandii hedge this afternoon, and I was privileged to see its first flight and first successful landing on the twig it used for a perch. Mum & Dad were a little apprehensive of my presence, but did feed him a juicy caterpillar and what looked like some tiny greenish snails while I watched. Alas, the feeding was just a little too quick for me to capture on camera.

This is the actual last remaining Swan Pit in Great Britain, and it is located within the grounds of the Great Hospital (although the sign in Cowholme meadow incorrectly indicates that the tidal sluice is the Swan Pit).

A photo I took in June 2009, note the model train on top of the sculpture.

Again June 2009, and a close up of the model train on top of the sculpture. It disappeared soon after I took this photo and was replaced with the steel silhouette that still graces this structure. As far as I am aware my two photos are the only publicly available photos of this model train in place.

The Sustrans bridge over the R. Wensum on Marriots way at the end of Train Wood. (I promise to get a much better photo of these steps in a few weeks time; but it will mean me wading chest deep in the River Wensum with my camera.)

Another view of the Cow Tower. I took this photo, because I like the contrast between the actual tower, and its reflection in the River Wensum.

Subject: 75th anniversery ww2 bombing Carrow hill

The following message was submitted on the Norwich Evening News website by Gareth Lewis, telephone: 07758786036, email: cargo-cycles@live.co.uk
Thursday 9th of July 2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the first civilian victims of the WW2 bombing raids on Norwich.

09/07/40, 5 victims: Maud Balaam (40), Maud Burrel (37), Bertha Playford (19), Gladys Sampson (18) and Bessie Upton (36) all killed by a bomb on Carrow Hill (adjacent to the tower remains) while they were all on their way to work at the Coleman's factory. There is a green plaque on the wall of the old school on Carrow Hill commemorating this event. 75 years on I think that those who perished in the war while doing war work should also be remembered alongside the service men & women who laid down their lives.

many thanks for looking

Gareth

Hi Gareth
Thanks for your email and we now have a two-page feature on the anniversary in the Evening News and EDP tomorrow,
Best wishes

St Mary's on St Mary's Plain, Coslany, Norwich. I love this church for its architecture, an original 8th century Saxon round tower and mish-mash of other styles including a few little contemporary modern bits. I am told the inside of this church is magnificent, but the Central Baptist Church (across the road) who hold the lease do not permit visitors.

The Edith Cavell memorial restoration and improvements outside the Erpingham Gate of the Cathedral close. This is a £50k addition to the already way over budget (circa £3m over budget) improvements to the Tombland area, The trees and shrubs have gone, and especially the large mature Fig tree that always gave a good harvest of ripe figs at this time of year. Some how I very much doubt that the work will be completed before the 100th Anniversary of the Execution of Edith Cavell on the 12th of October.
