Wicked-looking thing, this...................

Couldn't resist a new mole trap yesterday!

Apparantly, this one's designed to take care of those surface tunnels that a Duffus or Talpex is no use for.................the idea is that the spikes are entered into the ground a few times until they clear themselves a track, then the trap is pushed home until the trigger plate compresses the surface run. If it works as planned, moley will then try to open his run again and should quickly get the point

To be honest, I'm not entirely convinced by it, but I'm prepared to give it a go. It's a wicked-looking bugger, & I needed to tune it a wee bit to get the trigger-release set up the way I want it. Soon find out if it's any use or not
bodger

It looks like a mole rotisserie. Kebab anyone ?
lottie

My neighbour stands in her field 'til she sees movement then blasts the forming heap with a shotgun---her kill rate is suprisingly good---dontcha just love eccentrics.
Woodsmoke

That's kind of what I thought too, Bodge!

As I said I'm not entirely convinced by it, so I doubt it will see regular use..................it might be useful at some point though, especially if I get a customer with those annoying surface runs, but no sign of hills. We'll see..........

Even if it never sees action, it still looks kinda cool hanging in the shed with the rest of my traps

(Lottie? Your neighbour obviously has some extra time on her hands.....................I can think of worst ways to spend an hour or two though!  )

We've used mole traps like that one for years.  They are very good on the surface runs.

My MIL used to sit in a lawn chair with her .38 revolver and wait until she saw the moles working.  We never knew if she actually hit them or just scared them to death.

looks interesting. i have a good kill rates with standard traps so will be interested to hear how you get on with it.

confession time i have also shot moving mole runs (bare footed as to avoid disturbing them too much   ) there i have said it oh thinks i am totally nuts as do a couple of friends that have also caught me in the act   .
bodger

Please tell us that you're fully dressed.

I was always told that if you saw a mole lifting, then you could literally set your clock by it and that it would be lifting at the same time the next day. Well worth taking the shotgun, or in my case a sharpened garden fork along with you.

That's interesting!

As it happens, it's stamped 'The Victor, Made in USA'

I've never seen one like this before, hence my scepticism.................good to hear it's a proven winner from someone who's actually used them, though!
Rena

That does look pretty interesting.  I've never used mole traps...thus the popularity my property has with the pesky critters...what are the different traps out there like? Maybe some pics too?  Looking forward to hearing if the latest investment works for you Woodsmoke.
chicken feed

yes bodger fully dressed just bare footed oh said thats bad enough if anyone see me they would think i had lost the plot
bodger

I once turned out to do a mole job at a retired chemistry professors house. He'd really had lost the plot completely. The mole in his garden had beaten him to a frazzle. His once pristine garden looked more like the Somme than a tranquil idyll.
There were used smoke bombs scattered everywhere, milks bottles sunk into the ground, little windmills and major earthworks scattered willy nilly across what had become a moon like landscape But HEY ! You haven't heard anything yet ! This intelligent and presumably once sane man had actually redirected a nearby stream to flood his lawn in an attempt to drown his furry nemesis.

Hi Rena

They're a few different types available here.................I mostly use half-tunnel Duffus traps which have an entry on either side: the mole enters through a sprung wire loop & hits the trigger, which then releases the sprung loop & traps the mole between that & the top of the trap. Kills are pretty much instantaneous. The other popular type is a 'scissor' type Talpex. Again, the idea is that the mole hits the trigger, releasing the 'legs' of the trap, which spring together in a scissor action..........

You can see some pics of the common types here

Bodger? I had a very similar situation with a guy last year! He called me out when he was at his wits end................I turned up to see this once-verdant lawn looking like a building-site! Turned out most of the damage had been done by the owner...............he confessed he'd broken 3 spades by hitting mole hills in the hope of killing the culprit. He was hauling live-capture pipes left, right & centre out of the shrubbery where he'd thrown them in fury     He'd had hosepipes down, coke bottle windmills, the lot...............

According to him, he'd been driven to distraction by the moles for the last couple of years. I was sizing the job up as a done deal, to be honest, & was looking forward to letting him finally get a decent nights sleep. When I mentioned that I'd be charging him 80 (which I thought was damn reasonable!) he went a funny shade of cream & looked ill. Needless to say I didn't get the chance to sort his moles out. None so queer as folk, hey? He's probably dead now anyway..............I reckon his blood pressure finally saw him off
Jonty

Ahh, so that's what you got..for some reason I couldn't open the pics you sent mate.  I've seen one of those being used on youtube - well impressed I was too mate, it looks bang on for those surface runs, the chap I saw just depressed the run with his heel, set the plate flush onto the depression and bob's your uncle...  They do look like they were invented by the inquisition don't they.

I think the Duffus ones in the link are what caused half of Norfolks police force to turn out and barracade off DD's school last week!
My neighbour caught 14 moles using scissor traps last year. Personally i just put the hose pipe down a run and flood them out every day for a week. Works for me! Hmmmmmm.....wonder if thats why my neighbour had so many - they must have gone to drier ground! Love Lizzie
trapworks

That looks as though its based on the old english 'impassable'. It does work!

Don't you get plagued with Mozzies living in a swamp Lizzie?
