Why bother??

Over the Christmas period and the incredibly cold weather I thought my mare Holly was cold and being the caring owner I am I put an extra rug on her whilst turned out and then overnight on New years eve.

My reward for this was a huge bald patch that she had rubbed on her shoulder!  Not content with one bald patch we now have bald patches across her chest and on the other shoulder. She did the same thing last christmas only not as bad. As for her nether regions she gave them such a good going at that you would have thought she had just given birth.

I have so far doused her with louse powder (no itching of the actual tail or the mane) washed all her itchy patches numerous time with hibiscrub. Had her rugs cleaned, doused her bald patches with aloe vera gel to cool them down and sulphur powder incase there are any minute "friends and relations".  all to no avail, she still itches like a dog with fleas.

As a last resort I fetched the vet out last weekend, he had a good look, took some skin and coat scrapings (nothing showed up) gave her 2 jabs and a week of antibiotics. Then last friday we were back at the vet again for another jab and 5 days of antibiotics.

We still dont know what caused it (apart from the extra rug), but the vet thinks it is an allergic reaction to something but he's not sure what.

The extra rug has now been binned and i'm keeping my fingers crossed she has finally stopped scratching. Her previous owner did say she didnt like being too hot, so maybe that was what the problem was and keeping her abit cooler than normal is better for her.

Will try and take some pics tomorrow

Detergent residues in rug? Synthetic material in rug?
ClaireK

We really have no idea what has caused the itches. Her rugs she had been wearing for 2 months before she started scratching so hopefully that rules out the washing powder. I have come to the conclusion that she itches if she gets overly hot. She does sweat up fairly easily even when fit and being ridden everyday during the summer. I am keeping an eye on her and rugging her as little as possible.

As you can see below, the daft old bid has had a damn good go at herself.

I have ordered some cream off the internet that a good friend has recommended when her horse has bad sores from sweetitch. Hopefully it will do the trick and help the hair to grow bag quicker and more importantly help stop the itch!

Ooh er! Ive never seen anything like that before. Hope the situation improves quickly Claire. Horses eh? Who'd have em Love Lizzie

As you say Lizzie, who'd have 'em. Before I had Holly I had only ever had the vet out for my previous horse when he managed to stand on his coronet band and put a big gash across it in all my years of horse owning/grooming. With Holly it seems to be a regular winter thing. Last winter was her eye that she kept banging, this winter it's itchy spots Hopefully next winter will be vet free. I wouldn't be with out her though, no matter how frustrating it is.
