Where there's livestock...........

There's deadstock. Had to have the vet round today to put a lame pig out of it's misery. Not a fun experience. Even though I take pigs to the abattoir nearly every week it's not the same.
sod

No it is not the same

And in the cold light of day the costs are no fun either. I've put probably 100 quid's worth of feed into that pig. I'll lose sales of 300 or so plus I've got the cost of disposal and the vet bill. Not a good day.

Not good at all mate

Can you insure your business against this type of thing ?
Or just not worth it.

Yes, my pals nearby that farm commercially always make me realise that I'm thankful I only do it as a hobby. My neighbour lost a 1000 (by the time everything inc. disposal was factored in) cow last week. I lost a 2.50 chick out of a doz I'm bringing along the same week, I didn't bother to moan about my loss to him

Could you not have shot it and had it for home consumption or was it too full of meds??

Don't think it would have been fit. The vet at the abattoir told me that if arthritis is present in more than one joint they condemn the whole carcass as it's likely to cause infection in the lymph nodes and contaminate the meat. Based on that I wouldn't have wanted to eat it really. Plus I would have had difficulty proving which meat was which and that none of it had gone on to be sold. Much better to dispose of by the book even if the costs are a bit of a stinger.

Would the local hunt have been cheaper? Just thinking of options for the next one
chicken feed

Hunts don't usually deal with pigs over a couple of months old, too much fat and their small burners can cause them problems.
