Welmans

Bred a few Welmans (Welsummer x Marans) as a little experiment last year.
And I am quite pleased with the results

The chicks are sexed linked so you can sex them from day 1

The Cocks end up barred and the hens black
When the sun shines on the hens they look hazel tinted and some times petrol
I really like them

Dave C

And best of all their eggs are looking good so far

The 3 dark eggs are from the Welmans which are very dark in real life.

The brown egg is from a Welsex (Welsummer x Light Sussex) crossed back to a Welsummer.
I don't think the second cross was worth it as the eggs are no darker than the first cross, although the pullet is stunning in my opinion.
Rena

Very nice looking pullet! Love the colours of the eggs too!
bodger

Interesting. I'm told that some of the really dark egg layers are a cross or a blend.
Dave C

Well they are bred from good stuff, very dark eggs on both sides.

The Welsummer cock was hatched from eggs from Sandra

And the Cuckoo Marans hen was hatched from eggs from DarkbrownEggs

Welmans

I used to regulary hatch welsummer x cuckoo marans ever year.one elderly lady used to order 40 pullets from me, She said that customers couldn't get enough of their eggs. The only down side to them was that they were slow to start laying.
More recently I have done a similar cross only instead of the welsummer as a sire.I have used a French copper black, these are also sexed linked.  I have also used a splash French marans cockerel onto cuckoo hens.this will also sex link but the white spot is harder to see on the blue chicks
Dave C

Yes I must admit mine wernt the quickest to start laying.

I have also heard of people using  Wheaten Marans cock bird with success

Welmans

Pretty sure that they won't sex link with Wheaton marans
bodger

Kev of the pure breeds and blends, which generally would you say lay the darkest eggs?
cuckoomarans

I would say that the French marans will lay the darkest eggs, but I prefer the cuckoo marans as they are more consistent layers
Some of my French copper black eggs

Blimey Kev, I'd give my back teeth for something that laid eggs as dark as that. Come to think of it, most of my back teeth have already gone.
