Well dressings

Here for your enjoyment are the Wirksworth Well Dressings 2017. I'll explain a bit about what these pieces of transient art are as I go.
Lets start with biggest one (and one I did a bit of)

This dressing is roughly 3.5m square and weight around 1.5 tonnes! A week ago this was a set of bare wooden panels studded with nails, last weekend it was covered in a smooth layer of soft clay. On Monday this week a full size paper design was laid over the frame and the design pricked through onto the clay, Tues the linework was added in reeds and bark and twig, Wednesday the durable colour, coffee beans, dried maize, gravel, egg shells and the like was added (everything used on this well is natural), Thurs and Fri the bright colour of leaves and petals was added. The next photo shows a detail of this dressing and shows how it is made.

In total on this well probably had around 60 different people put in a couple of thousand hours total work to place by hand each of the tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of petals, leaves, beans, pulses, rice, grit, egg shell fragment, reed, wood shaving and all the other things that make the design. The kids and me did the bottom 1/4 or so of the 2 very outside panels.

Given the effort taken and size of Wirksworth there are only 3 of these large wells this year, here are the other 2:

The Rotary Club

And the secondary school. the schools are not quite so strict on their use of purely natural materials ;-)

As well as these big dressings there are quite a few smaller dressings such as the Infants and Preschools

A Primary school from a nearby village

And my favourite of the year from the playgroup

Also one from the Junior school to complete the set of trainee next generation well dressers.

At the other end of the scale here is the well of the old folks home

And this fantastic first ever well dressing from the team behind our late summer arts festival.

If you'd like to see these for real they are still looking good (as no doubt are ones in the several other villages round the Derbyshire Peak district also dress the wells this weekend) but don't leave it later in the week as the wells will fade and crumble away.

My mum loved her gardening and as kids my brother and I were regularly dragged off to Endon Well Dressing. Endon is a little village in the Staffordshire Moorlands. It wasn't much fun for us young kids.

I can imagine, the fun for kids in well dressing is helping make them and its part of the growing up of most Wirksworth little people
