Vehicle insurance---time to haggle

I've just had my van insurance renewal come 230 fully comp, thats up 20 from last year. So, I rang up and haggled for all I'm worth, and the outcome, down to 179. That must be sweetest 50 I've earned for years.

In the old days, people used to stick with the same insurance company year after year. These days you get a good deal from one company for the first year and when it comes to renewing it after 12 months, they whop your renewal right up. Its a shame, but it means that you almost have to have a new insurer each and every year.
Its the same with banks and new customer accounts. They give you a good deal to entice you and then screw you after the first year.
Surely, they would be better off trying to keep existing customers sweet rather than forever fishing for new accounts.

Even more so now that it's a real buyers market. There still must be a high percentage that just blindly renew though, why else would they hike up the prices? Unless the idea is to be haggled down so you think you've got a bargain and one over on them.

I haggle over motor insurance every year and have done for many years.  I have no loyalty to any insurance company.  Fortunately, I've never had to claim on my insurance but have to say from my insurance background, your insurer is only ever as good as their claims handling team/processes.

My car renewal was 112 this year. If I went online as a new customer It was 105 so I phoned up to get the cheaper price, which they did give me BUT the phone call cost me 6.50 Doh

50p is 50p Richard.

I only ask for quotes from insurance companies that have 0800 numbers.

I use the Moneysaver link on Martin's Money Tips which brings up a list of cheapest quotes. It can be a bit of a hassle but I saved 80 on my car insurance and 110 on my buildings insurance by getting cheap quotes and haggling with my present insurer. Just goes to show what a rip of the whole thing is.

We only have mobiles so 0800 still costs.

You live in a wood, so surely a trunk call would have been cheaper
