Utility Dinners?

This morning, I've necked and plucked two of my early summer hatched Light Sussex cockerels.
They are what I call utility birds, in as much as the hens lay a goodly amount of eggs and the cocks also produce a reasonable amount of meat too. The females aren't the heaviest of layers you can find, nor are the cocks anything like the best meat birds you can get but they do fulfil the two rolls reasonably well.

I'll get some photos of them on here ASAP. They've been free range since day one but I do however have some more cockerels of approximately the same age which have been continually penned and I'm expecting something from them far more substantial. I'll have to wait and see, as they wont be getting the chop until next week.

Here they are plucked and since this photo was taken, they've been gutted and are now cooling off in the fridge. I know that they are going to be full of flavour with a good firm texture.

As well as their staple diet of whole grain, they've been running free range in the orchards where they've been helping themselves to grass, various creepy crawlies and of course, windfall apples.

Nice job John, when are they going in the oven?

The first one goes in tomorrow. I haven't weighed them yet but out of interest, I must do.

I've got the heads and gunk saved to recharge my fox trap tomorrow to.

No waste

Bet there's some fine taste to them 2 John

You know yourself that home grown ones are 200% more tasty than the tasteless stuff the cheap end supermarkets sell.

Interested to hear what weights they made bodger?

I've just taken the breasts of 6 pheasants
Ended up with 1.2kg of free meat

Quite pleased with that

One has dressed out at five and a half pounds and the other five and a quarter.

Good weights them John

I hope you've all had a good dinner tonight, because I've had a belter. Very tasty chicken with mashed carrots and swede, runner beans and sautéed red cabbage, all swamped with proper chicken  gravy.

Lucky dogs - I used to be able to get chicken feet for peanuts - wonderful for soup.  For me - I did not have a dog then.  Now I have/had  [raw fed of course] dogs and chicken feet are no longer available.

Oh to be able to get chicken feet and green tripe - also not available these days.

Oh well, I have a ton of chicken necks on order.  OK, not a ton but about five kilos.  Or something.
