TIPS ON CRATING UP POULTRY FOR SLAUGHTERHOUSE

This year I've decided to get most of my birds processed by an abattoir. This is all new to me as I normally do it myself. The main thing I was wanting to know is when is the best time to crate up? Can it be done the night before or is it best to do it early morning? The abattoir is only 30 minutes away and I was hoping to put the crates in the back of my Land Rover or trailer.

Many thanks.

Never done anything like that but obviously crating at night is less stressful for both bird and human.

Your doing well to find an abattoir to do poultry Robin.

How many are you sending & can I ask what they are charging per bird.
RPF

Thank you for the advice Bodger! I may well do it the night before as they'll be asleep in the crate and won't notice that it's a bit cramp.

Dave, I managed to find a place near Oxford. They charge 2.65 for chickens and 5 for ducks. I thought that was quite reasonable. I'm sending about 25 this month, my LBs, Orpingtons, IG cocks and some misc cocks I don't require. Not all will yield a good carcass but at least I can get the legs and wings off.

You and I could do them for nothing if you lived a bit closer. I've never sent any off to be done professionally but that sounds rather pricey to me. If you haven't got the contacts, then you haven't got the contacts but if I ever had too many birds to do, then I'd go to my local gamekeeper.

I agree with Bodger, that sounds pricey to me. Try to find your local shoots and ask who they use for their processing, it's often a local who charges pennies plus a couple of birds
Dave C

We dont process any of the birds on our shoot, except the brace or 2 we take home.
We sell all our game to a game dealer who pays us at the end of the season.

Think I've said before but the cost we get is very low.
Like 50p per pheasant, 80p per duck and so on upto 4 for a Hare.

I supose its all about time and how much you have free to process
I would prefere to do my own as it would start to make the look expensive, but if it fell when i was working away or something i would consider it.

Are you leaving the legs on the LB ?
RPF

Yes, will leave the legs on the LBs
