Time to start thinking.......................

about the salmon fishing.

had a couple of calls this week from a mate of mine who has a lovely wee stretch of the River Ardle near Glennshee. Plenty of water just now apparently, and a pretty decent showing of fish in the pools!

Time to get the devon minnows polished up again, I think

(Mind you, if I run short I can always retrieve the ones Jonty so kindly cached for me last year.................   )

Poor ol' Jonty.

Probally just misread the tide.
Big Phil

Pink shrimp always did well.

Re: Time to start thinking.......................

What a cracking day I had on Saturday

15 1/2lb of wild Scottish salmon! A wee bit tartan, but that's only to be expected in wee headwaters like the Ardle

Remember this wee stretch Jonty? Just upstream of the Family Pool.........the water was running absolutely perfect! And I've never seen so many fish moving. There were fresh fish moving into the pools constantly

I had two good follows before he was hooked. Then a twenty minute tussle as, like a pillock, I'd only packed my 10' fly rod   That size fish in fast water on that light rod led to a rather 'interesting' few moments, I can tell you!

I settled for the one fish, even though I had the feeling it could be a red-letter day. Any hen fish would have had to be returned as a matter of course, but I preferred not to run the risk of hooking any & content myself with the fish I had

Nice fish mate   I wish I'd been there - if not only to have been able to witness and verify the fact that you actually caught one in real life.

In all seriousness, that is such a lovely stretch af water, you're very lucky mate.

I love the spinning reel and the fly rod mate....... Muppet  Mindst you, the biggest rainbow I ever caught was on a rod loaned to  me by a baliff after I'd opened my rod tube and found bugger all in it

Dougie had a bit of a chuckle at that too And, as is often the case, he  was barely out of earshot (along with his Gye net!) when it latched on, & I was dragged up & down that pool until it finally tired. It really was a contest to remember, & in truth I'm not entirely unhappy that I bested it with a fly rod. It's one thing horsing them out with the freshwater equivalent of an Ugly Stick, but that fish had me on the ropes a couple of times & I reckon it was a close-run fight!

I must admit though, there were some fish showing that really had me a bit worried! There'd have been no way on gods green earth I could've made an easy job of landing any of the Leviathans I saw moving in that pool   There was a 22lb fish taken the weekend before (Dougie had that one), & I saw a good half dozen or so that were at least of a measure. Never seen a run of such large fish in the Ardle. That one you had last year was above average for the preceding 10 years, apparently.............

We'll get another go at them together in November mate
