This makes for grim reading.

It strikes me that whilst our government seems only too happy to go to war for oil, its not prepared to sufficiently fund the fight to save the countries honey bees.  The result of their demise on us all, has been well documented, surely its a fight worth taking on.

Even more disturbing are the number of hives and bees that are being stolen. This is happening up and down the country, I assume because of the very high prices that Bees are now changing hands for, ie,290 a Hive at the Lincoln auction in the spring.Even more disturbing--It has to be Beekeepers that are doing it!

The press coverage over the last year or so on the plight of Honeybees has turned many people on to Beekeeping, this has also caused a shortage and of course, pushed prices up.

Speaking for myself, I have'nt suffered any losses and am now up to 23 Hives---thats a lot of buzzing.

Regards Beeman.

I notice you are in Lincolnshire, i'm just outside Lincoln, and looking to starting into bees, not just because 'everyone else is' but because I'm now in a position to start! Been wanting to do it for years...

The thefts are worrying, we have had our pekin chickens stolen on 3 occasions, we are now in the middle of building a new pen using security fencing which will also have barbed wire on the top to hopefully stop 2-legged foxes climbing over....!

We shall do the same with the buzzers too.....keep them 'shielded' from view if we can...

If you are looking to impart knowledge of where to start etc I would be ever so grateful! Don't worry, Im not asking to 'come see yours'....as with these thefts...people need to be vigilant who they impart info too! Mind you, at tis point in time I'd be nuts to actually try to swipe a beehive...the lil bleeders would no doubt 'sting me to death!'....

I've just read an article in a newspaper that says that British beekeepers lost  20% of their colonies due to disease last winter.
