The Wye Valley

DD wanted to visit Puzzlewood in the Forest of Dean so we made a few days of it. She'd never seen any of the Wye Valley, so we stayed a couple of nights in Monmouth and did Ross, Goodrich Castle, Tintern on the second day and then drove up to Hay on Wye on day three before coming home by way of Hereford and the Mappa Mundi.  Complete Facebook silence had to be maintained throughout (painful for me!) because we have people close by whom we don't want to see very often...

Symonds Yat, where the RSPB had set up shop helping people spot the peregrines

The tiny door at the Monnow Bridge, I don't think I'd have fitted through it!

I'd never been to Goodrich Castle before, but it is well worth a visit

It has a beautiful stained glass window:

I can't believe just how huge Tintern Abbey is!

Even the small doors are big (with DD for scale)

And me!!

I was in Tintern on Monday on a nostalgic trip with my old school pal. We used to stay in Tintern in our teens.
Had coffee and a cake in the tearoom next to the abbey, walked up to see the old wire works and Tintern forge, which hadn't been excavated when we stayed there in the 1960s.
Then went to Chepstow and walked up the steep path to Wyndcliffe to get the view of the Wye and Severn together - then back to Liz's place near Monmouth.

Which day were you there Sue?

Haha!  Monday! It was our last port of call before going back to Monmouth, so we didn't get there until about 4.  A small world!

Probably passed one another then!

We left Tintern about 4.30 - the shops had closed in Chepstow when we got there, but we weren't shopping - just seeing how much had changed since we were rowdy teenagers getting the last bus back to Tintern with the local lads after a night at the cinema which has long since disappeared.

Liz has now bought a house in a village midway between Ross and Monmouth, so we'd planned to go to see the peregrines next time I visit.

If you are ever in Monmouth on a Sat , pop down to the bottom market by the bridge and say Hello to us on our meat van ( Pennys Cuts )

You've stolen my thunder, we went to Goodrich Castle on Saturday and it was a brilliant visit. The audio 'doovery' that they give you to walk around with really gave you a feeling of how the place may have been. If anyone gets the chance to visit, its well worth the effort. Its a beautiful place.
Anyone want to see goodness knows how many pictures of Goodrich Castle?
