The Mountain Curs win a squirrel hunt

My two Curs did me proud on Sat. by winning a rimfire only squirrel and rabbit hunt . Of all the entrants only 7 squirrels were weighed along w/ just two rabbits . Weather was a bit lousy , 3 feet of snow and temps in the single digits . The dogs also treed a raccoon and the pup killed a possum on the ground . All of our hunting seasons are over now but for crows , looks like some crow shooting w/ the new Franchi and some ice fishing are in order .

Those dogs look keen, mate!

I reckon if you give that pup a holster & a sidearm she'll win a few more for you!

Thanks Smoke ! I forgot to mention of the 7 squirrels my dogs had 6 of them . Some biggins too ! 1 lb. 10 oz. was the biggest .

That's a big squirrel!

We've got two species here (as I'm sure you already know  ) The heavily-protected native reds probably go to around 10oz max', but the greys can easily go 1lb plus.

Trapping them is a nightmare due to the fact that the reds are so endangered. If you have a mix of the species in any one area, shooting or live-capture is really the only way to go as break-backs are out of the question.........................

The little reds or Pine squirrels here are a pest and can be shot , trapped or disposed of year round ' . To the South and Mid West there are Fox squirrels which often go over two pounds plus . These little Curs would make a good cross w/ lurchers , They are fearless and have some of the keenest eyesight on a dog I've seen .
