The Exmoor Emperor is Dead.

Have a read through this link. I don't know about you, but I think that the biggest crime is that the animal was left after it was shot and the meat wasted. It may have been a bit ripe during the rutting season but if you shoot something, then in my book you should eat it.

It's a little tough when something so beautiful is culled, and I assume it was culled as no foul play has been suggested.

When it's something of special significance, the biggest, fastest etc I think we attach more emotion to the situation.

But, as you say, why just leave it there? Perhaps there will be a little more to this story over the next few days.

Quote: A licensed hunter rather than poacher is thought to have killed Emperor Unquote.

Thinking about this statment rised several questions.

The stag was found beside a very busy road.

How did it get to lay beside that road

If it was shot by the road than there would be schwiess, if there is no schwiess then it was not shot there, but was dumped there.

Why, if the stag had been shot by a trophy hunter, was the trophy still attached to the carcess, you also need to take the skin way behind the shoulders to present a full mount.

If the stag had been shot by a licensed hunter, why was the carcess just left to rot and not sold.

Now I'm not a pro stalker, but I have been shooting deer for the past 30+ years and none to the questions I asked myself ring true to a pro stalker.

The shooting of Red Deer requires a high powered rifle, not a weapon to be fired across a busy road.

If a trophy hunter (TH) had shot it and paid 1ooo for the trophy they would want it hanging on their wall, again a pro stalker would not let a TH take a shot near a busy road.

Now the TH has their trophy and the Licensed hunter (LH) has the carcess, he would have sold it to bring in a little extra cash.

I feel this is not the work of a TH or a LH, but the work of of some organization to miscredit pro stalkers.

These organizations have being lossing their hold on field sports for sometime, so maybe their cause needed public attention again.

There has also been reported terrible mismanagement of deer, by some organizations claiming to be animal rights organizations.

I think you're right Border.  Such a magnificent beast would not have just been left I'm sure and I'm no hunter!  Dreadful shame.

Amen
Killing for fun is one thing, but at least do the animal the honour of eating it.
Take care

This was reported down here in our papers but they just had about him being missing feared shot as shots had been heard not about the rest of it I was into dear hunting but here they are a "pest" so bit different, we go out during the "ROAR" Mating time. Here there are very strick rules about shooting near roads etc. But having said that a young lady was shot by a hunter last week as she cleaned her teeth in a camping ground.
