The demise of the curlew

Until I went to a talk by this lady last night, I had no idea that curlews had diminished in numbers to the very brink of extinction!

For example, in Ireland, numbers have dropped by 97% in the last 20 years, with mainland Britain not faring much better.
Loss of habitat is the main reason - they're ground nesting birds, and intensive farming means their nests are being destroyed. In Ireland, destruction of the peat bogs is the main reason.

Reduction in  numbers means that they cannot resist predators by harassing them, so predation is increasing.

Take a look at the link, and if you're on her route get along to one of Mary's talks.
