Tasmania

What a beautiful place. Clean air ,a distinct lack of litter , graffiti and crime. Some stunning scenery.
Visited Port Arthur the penal colony for the poor souls who became hardened people imprisoned there because they had done something wrong after being transported. A very chilling place situated on a beautiful peninsula with a very narrow stretch at one point giving it almost an Island feel. When the colony was active dogs were chained so they could almost touch muzzles across the access road at Eagle Hawk  to prevent escapees.
In Cambelltown about halfway down the road from the North to the South of Tasmania a feature there is a line of bricks embedded in the pavement . Each brick gives the year, ship, name age and "crime" of somebody transported. Most were really petty and of a young age.
One aged about 9 was transported from the Uk for stealing a bag of soot !

On a lighter note I saw one of the biggest hardwood trees in the world -an estimated 86 metres tall  and estimated to weigh 405 tons. The biggest tree was 101 metres tall but it was about a mile further away and time was short.

I will put some pics up later

It is difficult to get a sense of perspective but the following two pics will gice an indication of the size of the BIG TREE !

In the first one my son and I are standing on a platform with the tree behind us- Nothing spectacular you might say but look carefully at the shadows in the second picture and you begin to get a feel for the size of the tree against my shadow shown from the platform.

A few pics from Port Arthur.
The first is a reminder of the purpose of the place but the rest give an insight into the views/location.

I seem to be the worlds worst jonah as far as fishing is concerned but that does not stop me having an interest in the sport.
I watched others catching some nice trout on Lake Barrington but I caught nothing-par for me. BTW Lake Barrington is where the rowing was done in the Sydney Olympics.

I did manage to catch some Flatheads down south after some very nice people took pity on me and showed me where to go. They said if you don't get a bite in 10 minutes watch out for the dolphins who scare the fish.

Looks like a stunning place.  Great pictures

My neice who lives in Queensland went to "Tazzy" and said it reminded her of Surrey! From your photos it looks a million times nicer. Love Lizzie

Ah flat heads used to catch them when fishing in Ummalqain in the north UAE, good fighters on light tackle.

A couple more pics taken from the site of an escaped convicts lookout post  watching the Tamar river. Apparently the plan was for a group of them to hijack a ship traveling on the Tamar and escape the Island of Tasmania.
This Tamar river is tidal as far inland as Launceston which is some 70km from the sea. It is a panorama view as seen by the consecutive pics.

A couple more pics taken from Mt Nelson  overlooking Hobart .
The views are spectacular but the photos do not do it justice.

Mo

Great pics! And good to see the 'other' Tamar
