sudden cock death

Just went out to roll the chook house on a few feet and found one of our wyandotte cocks dead. We still have one, currently in the breeding pen with his girls, but this one was from a top bloodline and was earmarked for next year's matings. Not a mark on him and I suspect heart attack but absolutely gutting.  I'm currently culling cock birds we don't want all of whom are still fit and well. bdooly typical

I've had the same with my LS. Its a bit of a mystery. I've had some of the healthiest looking dead birds imaginable and like you, I've put it down to heart attacks. Alive and kicking one minute and as dead as a door nail the next.

I had the same with a Welsummer cockerel, jumped in the air & died right in front of me.

Pleased you have a spare though

nice to know others have had the same thing and we're not necessarily cursed!

yep and we know Daphne has plenty of lead in his pencil as the welsummers have produced a couple of crossed clutches with his influence fairly evident in them.  Wanting to go the broody hen route this year so waiting for a broody so we can set some wyandotte eggs.

happened with my best breeder bird too   I was in the process of selling his son, luckily hadnt sent him off.
