Stinky carpet?

About five or six days ago our Oil fired central heating boiler went doo lally tap ( malfunctioned ). We've had the engineer in now and its been fixed but at the time, quite a lot of blackish water escaped from the system onto our fitted wool carpet.
Its now starting to stink like a thousand skunks have passed the time of day on it. As a result, our lounge has become a place that you run through to get to the otherside of the house. Other than an insurance claim, is there anything else you can sugest that we do in order to tame the carpet?

PS. When it first started to niff in there, Karen blamed pongy eggs in my incubator. As if I'd let a thing like that happen?

It might take a bit more than the old S&V Joe but it wont hurt to give it a go.

I think its stinking because its wool. Given time as it dries thoroughly it should stop stinking. Once the stain is removed run a dehumidifier next to it for a couple of days. Should work - fingers xd. love Lizzie

Can you lift it so that the underlay can dry out too?
Lorrainelovesplants

get a rug doctor from Morrisons or somewhere........guaranteed to remove smells in carpets like vomit, spilled booze, pooh and pee.........

I have such an interesting life.

Vinegar has done extremey well for us.

Personally I'd claim on insurance.

When I had the fight with the food processor blade and bled all over 3 carpets on way to phone I claimed on my household insurance (NFU)

They sent carpet cleaning co. out who had a go ,and failed, and they put a report into insurance co saying it was bu88ered. Insurance co. paid up as soon as I submitted my quote

Either way, I'd have had my carpet professionally cleaned and paid for by insurance.

Got to agree with Seabird....having delt with a good few water leaks and floods over the years....MHO...

Pretty hard to clean these stinky carpets and especially oil marks. I am not sure vinegar will work in this situation but if your carpets are expensive you can take of professional cleaning services.

Welcome to the forum James.
I'm pleased to say that drying it out and heaps of Shake n Vac sorted the problem out.
