Solar Panel Survey this Evening.

Karen has a friend who has recently had solar panels fitted on her house. She and her husband are  very astute financially and they  really know the score. They meticulously trawled through around 35 companies and sorted the wheat from the chaf,f before deciding on which one they were going to have to do the installation.
They reckon that their investment in solar panels is now coining the money in, especially when compared with the income that their money would have been earning if it had remained in the bank or in an ISA etc.

Having allowed them to do the hard foot work to get the best deal, we've picked their brains and  gone straight to the company of their choice and as a result, they are going to be doing a survey of our place this evening at 5.00pm. We'll let you know how we get on and whether or not we decide to go a head.

Justme would be a good contact.

I await the results with anticipationn.    I have heard so many differing views on the subject of who to go with and if it is really worth it, if you are looking to recoup not just doing it because you believe it is the way to go.
When we were in France we had solar for power and heating so we know what and how but as for over here and how to feed back in to the grid etc I have no idea.   I hope the people coming to see you give you all the info you need and are 'nice' people

Money is the main consideration and all the electricity will be going back into the National Grid.
Unfortunately, although I'd like to have our hot water supplied by solar power, I think that the upheaval of altering our existing system is going to be too much of an undertaking.
If we go ahead with  this, it will be as an investment. Finding the money for electricity bills taken care of and hopefully a bit more besides. We'll run the figures past you as soon as we get them

Albeit some 18-24 months back and I only did the the second fix stages , doors, skirting boards, architraves, stairs and banisters ect.I was roped into helping and assisting placing solar panels in place...
The guy who owNed the house was quite savy on these matters, as was the builder.
The idea being back then they were going to set up a company, doing exactly this type of project.
The house we are about to move into, seriously considering doing similar.
Will as and when we move , contact Mark and seek his advice.
Look forward to more comments on this topic, at the end of the dayit could possibly the way to go...

very interesting.
We just had a survey done the other day awaiting results.  Like you, we also are looking to sell energy back to grid. We had WREN out, who take a commision which goes into a community fund.  Im interested to see what they come up with.

Getting ours on the 24th , 16 in total

So, have you bought your panels or is this a rent a roof scheme?

I've bought ours 11,600 fitted on the roof, an estimate of 1,760, per year money back and savings, time will tell .
bodger

We're buying ours too

Crickey!! Too rich for me!

Our savings are going to build the apex extention thingy!

What with your current circumstances Lorraine, is it something maybe yout Mother could contribute to/fund.......

How would I swing that?
If she gifts us that amount of money - it will be seen as deprivation of assets.
I could argue that its to offset her increased heating costs, but as it will increase the value of our house, I think they would dispute it.

I think we will have to go for rent a roof.

It might not increase the value yet. The market is to new.

Rent a roof schemes are even worse. Would you buy a house that was encumbered with a contract that you have to accept?

Phew....I thought that this article would affect us but aparently it is just set to limit the huge expanses of solar panels that are being planned for land to cash in on the subsidy...

welshboy

Not sure- look on Navitron forum- apparently the govt are to slash fits as from 1 Dec - down to about 20p . The energy trust website had a pdf file up last night ( I read it) but it appears to have been taken down today.

Sites such as Money Saving Expert seem to agree that intallations already fitted will be guaranteed their feed in tariff price
Justme

Has yours been fitted yet? If it has & is registered you will be ok.

The dates seem to be

install fitted & registered before 8/12/11 get the full rate for the life of the scheme.
After 8/12/11 but before 1/4/12 you get the full rate till 1/4/12 then the lower rate.
Installs after 1/4/12 get the lower rate.

The leaked document can be found HERE not 100% confirmed but expected to be confirmed on Monday.

Ours have been fitted but the sun does not seem to have shone since then  Today has registered less than 0.5 units.
Justme

Ours did not register any thing today. But then water power would have been the system of choice today....
bodger

Its purring away this morning.
Lorrainelovesplants

Weve decided to do our own solar thermal tube fitting.

More details when the apex is up.

I have just had a phone call from the company who fitted our panels confirming that we are guaranteed the FIT that we signed up for but that they are frantically busy because they have been told that the FIT for new business is to be halved in just 3 weeks time
They are trying to get systems up and running before that date but I would imagine that this news is going to be a hughe shock for businesses like theirs that have set up to take advantage of 'selling' the FIT.
We have had ours because it will pay for itself in 8 years and the price is set for 25 years, it's not so much of a draw when it is going to take 16 years to pay off
