sloe gin

got sloes 8lb 1.5 litre gin what next how do I mix how much sugar etc please
Gareth

I like 300g of sugar to each 1 litre of spirits.

Make sure you have sufficient sterilised bottles to hand.

Gently warm the spirits and I mean no more than luke warm (otherwise the Alcohol will evaporate off) to fully dissolve the sugar. Stuff as many Sloes into each bottle as you can, and then top off with the spirit. Screw the cap on tight, and then because the seal has been broken I like to dip the bottle top and cap in some candle wax.

Label the bottle, and leave  it (at least) until the following Christmas before consuming.......... Lois & I have some 4, 3, 2, and 1 year old Sloe Vodka in the cupboard, and these we have laid down and will not be opened until they are at least 6 years old.

When you have consumed your Sloe; Gin, Vodka, Schnapps, etc. you can use the extracted sloes in preserves and sauces. We have a really bitter-sweet Vodka soaked Sloe and Apple sauce that is wonderful on roast Pork and Duck.

Have you just picked the sloes?

If so they will need to go in the freezer for a couple of days, if you don't want to do that, you will have to prick each and every sloe with needle or the like.

I don't like to warm the spirits that I'm going to use, won't risk loosing any alcohol.

I put a 1kg of sloes to 75cl of spirits gin, vodka or schnapps and 450grams sugar in a plastic bucket with lid make sure it's of food quality. Double up for larger batches.

The first few days I stir the mix until the sugar is dissolved. After a month or two I taste and add more sugar if needed.

I leave in bucket for a year or more, having a little taster every now and then, just to check all is ok, understand.
