Silver Cleaning...

I found this today in the local charity shop in a "bargain bin" , I know it's only silver plate but I have allways wanted a candleabra like this   I got it for £2:00 it all unscrew's into many bits for cleaning and all the silver plate is intact.
BUT anyone have any ideas on what I should clean it with   I can't get out to buy any "silver" cleaning products so any homemade silver cleaning ideas?

(I can treat richie now on feb 14th for a one off candle lit dinner of chip shop chips that he's not allowed bet the chips will cost more than my candleabra did    ).

Pilsbury

I believe a cloth dipped n lemon jice and table salt is an acceptable method, but please wait for someone to confirm that as I have never cleanned silver in my life

WHAT!!!! Waste good gin on a bit of silver - madness!  I have a cloth that you rub on to the silver and it comes up a treat. No nasty chemicals. i cant remember what its called as i re-cycled the packet but i got it from the supermarket. Love Lizzie

I invested in a polishing cloth for a silver pocket watch I inherited, think it was about a fiver and they really do the job. Any decent jewelers will sell you one

Nice easy method please cause "muggins"will most prob end up doin the job
Is there a dip and drip dry method
MrsWW

Seem to remember I've cleaned silver in the past by filling the sink with soda crystals and hot water, add crunched up foil then add your silver.  Allow to soak for a few minutes then rinse and buff to a shine.  It was many years ago though . . .  life's too short to polish silver so it's all been given away
morlan578

dip and drip .I knew i could rely on you mrs WW thank you ever so much I,ll give that one try
MrsWW

Be warned - it will hiss and smoke - don't inhale the smoke that comes off - it's seriously not nice

So i better not leave it in overnight then  oh.gif  oh.gif
MrsWW

Nope, only needs a few minutes - just until the hissing and smoking stops and then you can hook it out for rinsing.

I know I'm a bit late with this thread, but when I did a silversmithing course years ago, my tutor told me that ANY silver cleaing stuff you buy, will in time erode the silver, so with silver plate, it'll go quicker.  All he said to use on either real silver or plate was equal quantities of hot water and washing up liquid.  wash the item with it, then rinse and dry off.

And that Silvo stuff that you dip your silver in then rinse is one of the worst!!!!

thanks gran   that ,ll keep me out of trouble
Eschra

Let me know what method and how it goes both of you - I have one here I also got in an op. shop that I have been avoiding cleaning for nearly a year!
