Shop Bought Potted

So over the winter I've reverted to buying the "growing" herbs from the shops as all ours got wiped out by the wet, even the mint which is usually big enough to kill someone by May... just wondering if these little buggers have any chance of survival potted into a window box. They all seem to die rather faster than expected from home grown plants so not sure its worth trying??
Anyone tried keeping them going?
Gareth

Do you mean the rooted, potted herbs usually found on sale on the salad counters in the supermarkets?

If so I have had excellent results from these in past when planted out.

Although I bought all of the ones we used in the springtime and they took in their new position more or less straight away.

However, it is mid January at the moment  and I am unsure if they would survive if planted out now. All I can suggest would be to trim them back hard; to the compost surface and hope there is sufficient life in them to go into a dormant period for a few weeks storage in a cool dry place, and then enough go stored in the roots for them to push out new growth from the root stock in the springtime.

I have kept basil, mint, chives and sage going for the year from a supermarket, I am a but ruthless normAlly and figure all the growth has been used to different conditions so normally chop the whole lot back hard and. Ten let it re grow on my windowsill from what's left.
Sometimes it works, sometime it doesn't but I only buy them out of the reduced sections anyway lol.

Ah so far soo good then  Should have said they are for an indoor window sill box, not outdoors will try again with the out doors ones the old fashioned way and yes the ones you get in the salad section

Do you recommend any feed?
Gareth

I am a great lover of weed and urine based teas for feeding all of the plants in our garden: http://overthegate.myfreeforum.org/about23755

But I would not feed until the plants are showing renewed and vigorous growth in the springtime.

Yeah mine are in te inside of te kitchen window as well.
If they ever really took off I might put them outside but never really worried to much over them.

Good good, i just felt bad chucking the pots on the compost after I'd chopped them. To happy, healthy herbs
