As you walked in the school gates you could smell the greens cooking.
Playing find the meat amongst the fat.
Rock hard peas with the compulsary black bullets.
Boiled spuds with lumps and hairy bits.

But the pud's. Scoff to die for.

I'm sure I posted a few recipes for School Dinner Favourites somewhere????

Yep you did Bazzer - I bought the Becky Thorn School dinners book (I think she may have registered on OTG )
Anyway some lovely recipes from the 70/80's school dinner menus- I loved school dinners
Bazzer

That's right. She joined and posted on here to push the book and hardly, if ever posted again.

I remember a terrific dark brown mince beef in pastry, I've never been able to produce a taste like it!

And 'Manchester Tart'!!!!

Hmm, my memories are being forced to eat prunes which I despise to this day, our custard was always runny with lumps in. But by far the worst thing was the liver which had rubbery pipes in it, usually served with green mashed potatoes. Blerk! Our food used to be shipped in in huge matal containers from God know where. it was always waiting by the canteen door at 9am and lunch wasnt til 12 o clock. No wonder I was so skinny.. my mum used to think that was my main meal of the day. love Lizzie

Tarmac and pink custard, I think it was rock hard chocolate shortbread type stuff and strawberryish custard. It was lovely, you could take the shortbread away with you, because even after it had been covered in custard it was still rock hard.

The worst, simply most horrible thing which we only got about once a term was spaghetti bolognese.  Everyone else used to love it and word would get around because of the smell.. Ah yes, the smell, well to me it was just the smell of sick!   And then I would have to eat the bdooly stuff. Once, the headmaster who was a tyrant and looked like a toad and smoked his pipe all the time, stood over me until it was finished and HURRAH I chucked it up again all over his leg  . He was a mean old sod.

I was in my late 20s before I ate spag bol again. Love it now!

well folks, some brilliant replies and thinking back, I have to say that the "puds" were by far the best , but as for some of the main meals mentioned   I'd forgotten about some of them

What were those black bullet hard things in the peas?

School dinners

I had school dinners in the 1950s and 1960s, I liked most of them but you would get somebody moaning. Back  then lots of children were glad to have hot meal during the day.
Eschra

And the piece de resistance (i have no idea if I spelt that completely wrong) BAKED ALASKA (not baked alsation as my friend used to refer to it as   ). Mmmmm mmm YUM!

You're so right. Blue tickets and white tickets. Thinking back, it was a disgrace that some kids had to hand in white tickets. All the other kids were well aware what that meant.
Bazzer

Dark Green, nearly black cabbage that you could smell cooking as you went in the gates at before 9am.
Digindeep
