Razors Clams

We're itching to go out and try and catch some razor clams, I've watched allot of youtube "how to" video's mainly of people collecting them for use as fishing bate.

Anyone have any tips or tricks on collecting them? some videos show just table salt poured into the dimples on the sand others show digging for them or useing a high salt  and water solution squeezed into the holes/dimples on the sand with a washing up liquid bottle.

Any advice would be great

I've never tried to collect them but up here the locals walk backwards along the beach and then dig like mad in the area they've just walked over - if you see what I mean
I believe they taste like a bit of old hosepipe

thanks Alice love it! "Old hose pipe"

The other week on the beach we spotted a woman walking backwards with a long pole thing we assumed she was looking for lug worms or something mmmm maybe she was after Razors (or just a strange woman walking backwards   )

The first thing to do is to actually find a beach that actually holds the razors. Not all do. You do this by either getting a tip off from a local or by keeping your eyes open when you walk on the beach at extremely low water. Look out for little indentations in the sand and a squirt of water as the creature senses your approach.
Don't be fooled into thinking that there maybe razors in a particular spot because of the empty shells all aroun,. they could have been washed up there from many miles away.
Very low tides are the best times to collect them. There are some occasions, when you will see the razors standing proud of the sand by one or even two inches. What you need to do now, is to take hold of the shell and gently pull the razor shell out. Don't snatch or you'll simply pull the bit you want to eat out and it will disappear down into the sand never to be seen again.
if you see the indentations and the squirts or water but no shells, then this is the time to bring out the salt. Simply pour some into the indentation and up will come the razor. Either they don't like salt or they think the tide is in.
I hope this helps, happy hunting.

Think I've found a perfect spot then because the otherday the OH kept getting squirted   only tools we had with us was a bucket and a fishing net  :xroll: managed to murder a heart urchin though  (by accident   :xconfused: ) we'll go armed with salt and a spade this time.

Razors can be collected on Oxwich beach, I've done it myself. You need low water on a spring tide.
Go armed with an emptied washing up liquid bottle, 1/3 full of salt and filled up with water then shaken.
Then at the low water line look for keyhole shaped holes. Put the bottle nozzel in the hole and give a good squirt. Then just wait a few seconds and the Razor will push itself up and out of the sand, at this point you grab it and gently pull it out. Good luck

thank you beeman we the next big tide is sunday the 14 we got our bottles of salt water all ready to go ,do we look right on the low water mark, last time we were on rhossili at low water i got a few serious water jets from the sand but not that many and we took a pot of salt which when tipped just piled up on the surface to no effect im working twelves next sunday so we will go next friday ,i hope i will be able to report a good catch

thank you ever so much "richie"

Richie,Sorry for the delay answering--- pooter problems.

I have only had Razors from Oxwich, at the church end of the beach, thats where I used to launch my boat.
The lower the tide the better, hence spring tides at low water. Try not to stamp around when doing it as they are sensitive to vibration.

Are you using them for bait? as I did for Bass, or are you eating them? as the Spaniads do. The white fleshy part looks edible, but I stuck to my sarnies . Anyway happy hunting.
