Rats and Mice

I was talking about rats with a family friend, as you do, and he mentioned that if you have mice, you won't have rats and vice versa as the two won't live together.
He was told this by a Ratman who worked in the coal mines after he had noticed that down the pit you would see either rats or mice in certain sections, but never the two together.
He can't remember the reason the Ratman gave and I wondered if anyone here had heard this?
chicken feed

i have heard this too. but going by the ammount of bodies of the two species in the log barn i dont think its true.

I have heard a lot of people say this , but if anyone has ever been involved with threshing a stack of corn (many moons ago !) i think you can dispel this idea.

The www is not much help either, I've seen arguments both ways

I have had to use bait this winter. There were rat and mice poo by the bait so Norfolk rats and mice are obviously quite sociable! Love Lizzie
matt the rat

It's a myth.

Rats will, however, predate mice which is where the myth originated.

Thanks Matt

I should say that the myth in this case was told to our family friend many moons ago. He also told me how the Ratman collected rats in his copious jacket and killed them inside it. Apparently the last one was the worst because by the time he got to that one it was biting...

There's a substantial rat population in the gardens of our houses round here and one of my dogs has caught a mouse in the garden before now too so I reckon it's not the case either!
freckle

We have both! And lots of them this year!

I found a mouse turd in the spare room when I was redecorating in there last week! So at least one's been in the house for a poop!

Yeah......and he thought it was a fantastic place for a poop, he's now telling all his brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles, aunties, when they need a poop, poop heaven is Polly's place.

I'm hoping his complaints about the lack of toilet paper will put em all off!
