Quail and Red Jungle Fowl

The cold weather brought out the quail in force.  The quail and Red Jungle Fowl are all free ranging and roost up trees and can come and go as they please. I'm kind of surprised the RJF's haven't been decimated by Long Eared Owls. (YET!!)

Nice picture

Agreed! Our quail don't look anything finished to what yours does!!

I started counting the quail this morning when I was feeding the Junglies.  I gave up at fifty and they were still coming out of the bushes!

What a nice way to keep them
tlewis

I'm not actually keeping the quail. They are completely wild.  Actually it's illegal to keep any game bird in Washington State without a breeders licence.
confused

do you eat them ?
Rena

Here in Oregon it is illegal to hunt/kill/eat wild quail.
tlewis

No, I've never hunted them.  I believe they are legal game to hunt during upland game season.  I just love to see and hear them around.  They wouldn't be very sporting around here, would they?
I think I'll try a few pheasants next year.  There are wild turkey all around, but for some reason I can't get them to hang around for long.

Trust me, you'd be joining the club of outlaws already here.... after all, It isn't still called The Wild, Wild West for nothing!

Seriously though, if it meant the difference between eating and starving, and a few of them came by.... I'd take the risk and feed my family.

nice looking birds there! We have friends in Idaho that have wild turkeys all over the place!

Great photos the only quail I have seen here were much smaller. The only wild turkey are ones that have escaped and gone wild they are so stupid that they roost on fences and at night you can just go along and knock them off Roast turkey

Rena have to agree most of these turkeys are on private land but still go West
