Portable generator

OH wants a petrol genny to power an electric chainsaw on his wood gathering forays. Being a genny virgin he dosent know wether to go 2 or 4 stroke. Could anyone offer any advice please?? LOve Lizzie

Why not a petrol chainsaw?

Otherwise always go for a four stroke genny. They are quieter, and you don't have to put 2 stroke oil in the petrol

Just what I was thinking.................why not just go for a petrol saw?

Dragging an electric cable around in a wood, or any other place for that matter, would be a right PITA.

Is there a reason why he can't use a petrol driven one.

Basically he has had 2 petrol chainsaws and prefers the electric one. I dont know why , also we may want the genny for other uses. Thanks for the input chaps! Love Lizzie

Oh, ok!

What wattage is the saw he wants to use? I'm guessing it'll be between 1.5-3Kw? So in that case he'll want to have current to spare to avoid bogging the genny down.............If he goes for a 3.5Kw unit, that should do the job without any problems, & also give you the option to run a few other odds & sods if the fancy takes you.........

You should be able to pick up a decent 4-stroke unit for under 400

We have three gennys now all get lots of use in summer doing things away from house. Just thought on Saturday I needed to use disc grinder over fence in paddock and as one genny is on ute back took that safer than lead throught the wet grass. Anyway just remember if they use 1.5kw to run need 3kw to start also 3kva is not 3kw it is less, most bigger ones are 4stroke here and as said you dont have to keep mixed fuel around like for petrol chainsaw.

Its 850w apparantly. just a small Bosch saw. Love Lizzie

Well a 2kw would do easy and can run lot of other fun things with out long leads from house, also tv and lights when power goes of during motor races

Thanks all, off to trawl internet for a suitable one. Love Lizzie

I'd go for the four stroke option everytime. Four stroke unleaded, and two stroke made from the same, goes off pretty quick if you don't use an additive. But the two stroke goes off the quicker of the two. That's fine untill you leave some in the fuel tank for a long period...........

lizzie just been talking to our son he's a mechanic (doing small motors/chainsaws etc.) and he reminded me to say   When looking for a genny DON'T touch the ones that have genny and motor built to-gether  I know \ I will try to explain, most of them the motor is seperate  from the genny joined by a coupling but a new type is coming out that the motor and genny are one   so if either packs up the whole lot is dumped. Long winded sorry but we just worried about this for you. He has had to tell a few people the bad news
