Poorly land rover discovery TD5

Hadn't used the car for a week cos we couldn't get out.  Took it to Lynton yesterday afternoon - no problem.  Went to Lynton with recylcing this lunch time and on the way back we could smell burning as we came up our lane.  Stopped outside house and left car to cool down.  went out two hours later and opened bonnet - half engine is covered in oil.  This does not bode well I think.  Have found where oil is coming from though.  Just under the bonnet under the windscreen there are three tubes in a line attached to the back of the car with little clips.  there is a lightly smaller tube immediately beneath that should be clipped too but just before the middle of the windcreen it has sheared off and the oil is coming from there.  No idea where the other part of the tube is.  Any ideas? expensive? terminal?

Not sure about landys but had a similar problem with my Grand Vitara and it was simply wear and tear that had broken a pipe, oil level hadn't got low enough to cause a problem in mine and cost pennies for a new bit of pipe to sort. Fingers crossed it is similar for you!

sounds  maybe a oil breather pipe should not be expensive. you got any landrover scrappies about? www.ridgeway4x4.co.uk is local to me and they do brand new parts as well as salvaged maybe worth a go  richard is a top bloke very helpful

Thanks DM.  Simon is on way to garage with it now - just hope it doesn't blow up on the way....think I have used your guy for spares before.  very helpful and prompt courier service.  Reasonable too.
daddymatty82

cool hope it helps was the pipe crumbly and looked as iff it was dirty oil?
debbie

well, car got to garage 15 miles awaywith no problem at all - you would never know there was anything wrong with it.  Seems that the oil filter has "exploded" waiting for a verdict in an hours time but hopefully its not terminal
daddymatty82

that is a cheap job oil filters are only couple of quid then a gallon of oil to wash through then how ever much oil engine takes i think a few gargages around here are doing oil and filters (oil filter and air) for 15 quid  maybe less il ask a mate who has just had this same problem so il ask him later

cheers DM

Fingers crossed for you Debbie, have they said why it exploded yet?
debbie

not yet.  Simon has just gone back to hopefully, collect it now - he's been for a walk on the beach whilst it was being done
debbie

well, we live to fight another day.

Apparently the TD5 ES has two oil filters and the one that "exploded" was the revolving one (didn't even know that they had two let alone that one revolved).  Wasn't so much an explosion as "an unscrew knock the metal cap off at the same time whilst giving it a good denting " thing.  All up and working again, filled with oil and the garage only charged us 40 - did it whilst simon went off and had a coffee.  have to say the garage were fantastic...phoned em at 9 and the car was seen and finished by 12.30 - bearing in mind they were 20 miles away from us and they gave us loads of telephone advice and queries before we drove it to them.  bargain I would say!

Will be dropping off a few pork chops to them next week by way of a thank you...they only do quads and 4x4's there and have a huge sign up outside saying 4x4 parking only anything else will be burnt.  Run by 2 brothers into their trial biking and quad racing.  Seriously nice family.

Thank goodness for that Debbie!!! Pleased for you - my poorly car has been fine ever since its little hiccup! I think it was just sooooooo cold that morning. We had a wind chill of about -12 and it just threw a tantrum about being made to go out. Love Lizzie

Good stuff! At least some bits of cars are cheap and easy to fix still! Must admit I gave up doing anything on my own after the series 3, I'm pretty sure with a big hammer and an adjustable spanner pretty much anything on that was fixable!
debbie

really want to change the discovery for a defender.  discovery is brilliant and has all mod cons that you can think of and as confortable as you can get and when we bought it it certainly did the job but for what we do now its got to be an old defender as TBH going offroasd twice a day is wrecking this one no matter what LR may say.
sapphire

Defenders are good, OH has one on his wishlist
