Picalilli

Has anyne got a tried and tested recipe please. We've an abundance of cauli's at the moment.  The end result should be quite colourful as the caulis are bright purple!

Thanks in advance
bodger

Its a shame that for some reason the pictures have gone AWOL but its a start.

Please, I am from Germany and I am always interested in new recipes and new, interesting veggies. Could you explain to me, what a Picalilli is? Never heard about it and cannot find good informations.
MrsWW

Welcome Cara.

Piccalilli is a mustard pickle containing veg such as cauliflower, pearl onions, runner beans, red pepper pieces or any other variety of veg that the maker fancies.  It is usually quite a bright yellow colour due to the use of Turmeric and English Mustard Powder.
LadySlip

....so where do you buy pearl onions
MrsWW

Pearl onions have to be hunted out as they don't seem readily available.

Having not made picalilli for a good few years, I can't remember where I got them last time.
Bazzer

Can't you use the small, cocktail onions sold in supermarkets.

thats what my mum uses Bazzer.  She does a stunning picalillii - I'll see if I can get the recipe from her.

Thanks to Bodger for pointing me in the right direction, and more importantly, to Storm for the recipe.  I've just finished making 3 big jars of  pink picallilli !! we had purple cauli's in the garden and the result is quite spectacular - it looks more like a heavily loaded pimms in the jar rather than a condiment

Keep it for a while Jonty, the flavour only improves - be just right with a piece of Pork Pie on a cold shoot day
