Over heating pigs.

I'm having to make regular journeys across the field to keep the water topped up for the pigs and to make sure there's water in their wallows. In spite of this, Matty the boar was panting when I went across there last time. I've cooled him down with some not too cold water but it looks as though I'm going to have to keep on going across to them.

Do you know how a 'shotgun' house works ? Basically it has an open passage in the middle, but the passage (like leaving the back and front door open in the house) causes a cool draught. Could you not have some way of opening up their arks both ends so that there's a through going cool breeze ?

Failing that there are a lot of cheap garden parasols on offer

They're all roaming free in the fields with arks.

I meant rather that with a closed end that the ark must be like an oven in Summer, but if had a through going draught then it'd be a cool shady bit.

Sorry Bodger, all I know about pigs is that they're supposedly good eating and that they're determined blighters

Our boar and the two sows he's living with at the mo have a ventilated ark that's open at both ends. This is because they've done their best to smash the thing to pieces and I'm not repairing it till they start to behave themselves.

That will be never then Graham  One of my arks is an all singing dancing one and after what you've said, its made me realise that I can take one end off it.

The back is off the ark and this morning we've made them a shelter with a big piece of old carpet. Not as a template for anyone else to follow but I'll try and get some pictures.

We took the door off yesterday afternoon.

The girls now have a nice through draft.

This morning we set this Heath Robinson structure up to give the pigs some more shade. I'm really pleased I didn't get around to taking this old carpet to the skips.

Of course, since doing this, its gone a heck of a lot cooler and its been spitting with rain for the last twenty minutes.
