Out of season and from way outside the UK.

The next time you eat food that bis out of season and from way outside of the UK think of this.

Developing countries depend on exporting food to the UK and other countries but as this report suggests, this trade can have serious consequences for their populace.
Its down to air miles and helping these countries to be able to support themselves.
Its become trendy to talk about air miles these days but as a family we try to avoid purchasing food grown in foriegn countries that can be grown in season here in the UK. How about you?

i agree bodger - i do try to avoid anything which could be grown here but i do know these countries rely on their export income - i was shocked (naive me) by all the kenyan flowers (silly me thought they should grow crops rather than roses) and the air freight probs but the workers were the losers unfortunately

i do buy fair trade but as my daughter has a nut allergy cannot buy fair trade choc cos they ALL have nut warnings on them

so now we have water prints as well as carbon

Take it easy we export to you and are very dry in parts of our country.  It has been worked out that ours uses less carbon miles to supply you than your own farmers, some of these reports are made of twisted facts andare just propaganda from interested partys. We get same kind of things here about imports.

Thank you Lou  it was a bit   as we hear a lot about groups saying about "carbon miles" against our exports from over seas.Where does he live?

Having read that article I can't think of any beer imported to the UK from developing countries, most of the stuff with foreign names is brewed here under licence and is carp. I suppose there may be places selling Madagascan Pilsner or Sudanese Stout but I haven't come across them. Anyway, I would normally make a point of buying home produced food, with a few exceptions such as Danish marinated herring.
