our wind turbines (lots of pics)

thought you might be interested in these guys,

this is our 'rutland windcharger' that has done almost 18 years stirling service. it charges a 12v battery bank and did our lighting for years, sadly it died recently :-? and spares are no longer available for this model ( they haven't been for years but i had a pile of old ones to salvage bits off ) the out put was only 50w but it was enough to do our lights and a hi fi even a telly in the winter.

things have moved on allot since we fitted the old whirlygig so after much research we decided to go BIGGER :-) much BIGGER. we went for a proven 2.5kw on a 6.5m tower. it charges a 1000ah 48v battery bank which supplies a 4.5kw inverter (this converts the 48v dc to 230v ac)

this is it just before we put the blades and cover on.

this is us about to start winching.

'going up'

and this is it making 'lectrickery

this is the battery bank where it's stored before being converted to ac for use on the croft and in the house. the bank stores enough power for 2 days usage, which includes washing machine tumble dryer and electric ovens. if the battery bank gets low and there's not enough wind the inverter autostarts the genny before installing our turbine we used to burn 100lts of diesel a week for around 8 hours a day of power now we burn about 200lts a year for 24hour power and even when the power goes down elsewhere (which it often does here) we have a seamless uninterupted supply :-)

cheers, paul

ime impressed! who's the little guy?
camillitech

that's ma boy and chief apprentice fish,
i believe in giving him a good start to life.

he's a better shot than me but a lousey fisherman :-)

when he was 18 months old we had no babysitter so he spent his next 18 months at sea with me and willy (the guy in the turbine pic) diving for clams (well helping on the boat) so he has great sea legs.

cheers, paul

how on earth do you keep your atv that clean???...... :q28:

great turbines,
bodger

How much did that sort of set up cost you. Its obviously much cleaner than diesel Paul but how long will it be before it starts to pay its way ?

Interesting stuff, we'd like to install one in out new place when we move

Theres already a mast there, I've shown this thread to the old fella and he understood all ya funny talk about ac dc b&q stuff!

was an arm and a leg bodger 15k :smt103 but we got 3k back through a grant. if you're on the grid already the cost is considerably less and i think the payback is around 4 or 5 years depending where you live (though i'm not sure) but we're not on the grid and were spending 160 a month on diesel, we borrowed the money over 5 years and the loan repayments are 300 but we now have oodles of leccy 24 hours a day we also don't have all the hassel of buying, transporting,(tanker won't deliver) dozens of barrels of diesel every year. if your not on the grid or your getting silly quotes from suppliers to get connected it's deffo the way to go. a friend of mine is 200m from a pole and getting quotes of 11k :smt103 for connection then he's got all his bills to look forward too. we're 8 miles from the nearest pole so god knows what that would cost.

it's been up almost 2 years now without a glitch and has seen some ferocious weather, unlike most turbines this type continues to produce it,s full output even in storms :-) our excess power goes into heating our porch.

cheers, paul
