No more pound notes!

On this day 1983 the government of the day saw fit  to replace our beloved green pound notes with the pound coin. They've become just a memory now but if given the choice of having either twenty 1 notes in my pocket or twenty pounds worth of coins, I know what I'd be happier walking round with.

Some of you wont be old enough remember the 10 shilling note.

Funnily enough we 'found' one the other day whilst sorting through boxes, my daughter had never seen one before, she was born in 1984.

Not sure I can remember the 10 shilling note

They were brown in colour.

If i am right there are an awful lot of fake 1 coins out there .

You wouldn't be walking round much with 20 pound coins in your pocket Bodger - they'd have pulled your trousers down within a few steps!

I remember our 10s and 1 pound notes   but then I'm old

When I first joined the RAF, my Nana used to send me down the Sunday Post each week with a bar of chocolate in the middle & a couple of pound notes wrapped around the outside. That brown paper tube was the only thing that kept me sane for months!

It used to be something to look forward to, & a couple of pound notes in your wallet made you feel as though you had 'proper' money, I always felt. pound coins just don't seem to have the same appeal

I still have a pound note and one of the old 5 notes from about 20 year ago.  I can remember the 1/2 p and wondering what would happen to the sweets that only cost 1/2p !! I loved the 20p when it came out, and 1 to a kid looked like gold coins!  however like you say fair bit of weight to carry around!

I was 10 on Decimalisation Day so I remember ten bob notes.  They were like riches!  Funily enough I saw one at an antiques fair yesterday.    I sold an old style 1 note (from before the smaller later ones) for 5 about 20 years ago.

There was a grandmother recently who tackled robbers because she knew she had 15 1.00 coins in her handbag and boxed the robbers round the ears with it.

I remember my 1st job, I got 29 PW & gave my mum a 5 AND what I could make 24 do was incredible & I always had a jar of money left over. I bought clothes from one off boutiques, expensive shoes ( all in the new year sales) Aged 17 my wage went up to a massive 37 & with that I could afford to run a car. Now 35yrs later I have to be really careful what I do with money & it seems to go nowhere. I'm lucky that I'm not interested in going out, buying clothes etc & I prefer the company of my Lurcher, Pet Rats & Budgies. I admit I do have sky BUT I don't go out, smoke, very rarely drink, buy clothes OR go on holiday. I'm quite happy walking My Gorgeous Lurcher OR watching tv with a Rat on my knee

I remember starting on 690 pound a year smoked, partied hard, had great clothes, went to pop shows, bought car etc them were the days. Now great life but no spare money
