New Cockerel

I bought a young RIR cock and 5 point of lay chickens about 8 weeks ago.
I said to the wife about 3 weeks after we got them that he was crowing a lot but I had not seen much "treading" going on.
I did however save 24 eggs and put them in the incy.

All I can say is he must be shy and does not like being watched as I have 22 out of 24 hatched.

Some are RIR and some are RIR x Light Sussex (Bodger's)

Well pleased.

RIR x LS  the traditional cross for breeding layers.
Dependant  on how good your RIR is (Hopefully he's not out and out show stock) you should have some crackers.
The bonus of course, is that the RIR x LS is sex linked. Which means that all the girls will be brown chicks and the boys white.

I thought that this might be an opportune moment to bring this post from 2008 back up to the top.

The cock is from a utility strain so as you said, paired with your strain of Light Sussex the chicks should make cracking stock
I'm thinking that the cream chicks are cocks, the lighter brown ones are hens and the darker brown ones will be pure RIR, mixed sex.
I'm still trying to find a good utility Light Sussex cock to breed some pure Light Sussex but upto now all I can find are show birds.
How have your Fred Cam chicks turned out ?

They're looking good and as I've said in another post, I've managed to hatch eleven of the little blighters but only four pullets. I don't suppose you fancy a break in North Wales, because if you do, then you could take your pick.
I'm going to retain a couple to be on the safe side and then I'm going to put them back onto hens that are from my pure strain.

A few years back Dave C and myself hatched some Welsummers x LS and they were sex linked and produced some half decent laying hens.

Good hatch mate they should make beauty's

Look forward to seeing how they turn out.

They were a good cross John, my hens looked a bit like Buff Sussex just a little darker.
My mate who takes my Retired chickens still has 1 and she's still laying well

I'm trying to arrange weekend cover for my animals.
If I can sort it we would like a trip to North Wales and be able to take you up on your kind offer of a Light Sussex cock.
I'll let you know.
bodger

We could put you up.
