My first Deer stalk

Got invited out last night on my first Deer stalk.

A chap I know at the local gun club is a gamekeeper and after a bit of a chat over a coffee got invited out.

We met up at a local village and then got into his car and went to the woods.

As soon as we entered the woods we saw a Muntjac.
So we drove back around, got out the car set up the gun and went back to see.

Unfortunately he had moved on but we did see a Doe, however she was very pregnant so we left her.

About 5 minutes later we came across a nice looking Roe buck but he was not a safe shot so we watched him go.

Then we saw a couple of Muntjac’s but no clean shot for them.

We decided to head back and try another area, on the way back we spotted a roe buck, heading our way, so got the gun ready and tracked him, he got into a safe area – however he was hiding the kill zone behind a tree.
He then spotted us and did a runner.

After about another 30 minutes we spotted a number of fallows, but again no safe shot so watched them go.

We were just about to pack it in as the light was going when we spotted a perfect roe buck.
Got the gun set up, was squeezing the trigger and he ran away.

So unfortunately no venison in the freezer this time, but had a fantastic time and want to go out again.

Sounds like a fantastic evening out, and I bet that's you hooked for next time!!  Many people pay a lot of money for staking so you're very lucky

Great isn't it!!!

Great evening, bet you can't wait for next time

Thanks Guys,

It was not free, but much less than what a normal trip out would have cost.
Indeed I want to go again and next time hope to get one for the freezer.

I am not interested in trophy hunting or anything like that, just want to go and put food on the table
hopefullbry

Nice 1 there, seems you have a variety of deer there to choose  from to

A lot would rather take a pregnant muntie doe  ( so i have read )  saves shooting a doe with a young un in toe

Next time you will connect  i expect

Yes we did have a chat about that in the pub after.

He said not to take it as it was my first time out and he does not feel happy about taking a doe that heavy, but you are right a lot of people would have taken her.

He has a paying client going out for 3 days from tomorrow so I expect he might get her then.

We did see loads of deer, but all I kept on thinking was mmmmmmmm dinnner
One for the Pot

Sounds like you were near me

The good thing is you got to see them...it's not easy is it lol

Buck fever will remain with you for a long while now.

That sounds a great time you saw a lot, here have to tramp for miles in bush to get them and carry out like other said thats it you are hooked I know and feeds are well worth it

Glad you enjoyed it. It sounds like good ground if you're seeing three species like that.

The majority of real stalkers would not shoot a heavily pregnant doe though. She contains next years sport after all.

Thanks All,

Well I have got the bug, just got a text from the Gamekeeper to see if I wanted to go out again tomorrow night...

Umm let me think about that

Will let you know how things go (it might be called off if the weather is too bad however)

And if it's a big 'un - make sure yu shoot it close to the road

My first deer got it's revenge on me with  the best part of a 2 mile drag

Have a great time, I hope you get something for the freezer.

Great write up

Look forward to hearing how you get on next time.

Great stuff, best of luck

ok second time out was great, we did not see as many deer and all apart from one we saw were fallow doe's.
I did get set up to shoot the one fallow buck we saw but could not get a shot before he went running.

So been out twice now and still no venison for the freezer, not to worry - just means I need another trip out

And who said stalking is addictive - ha im not... ok maybe a little... hmm maybe a lot..... yes ok I am addicted!!

Patience is a wonderful virtue - but venison tastes better!
Moby Jones

Have you been out again? Third time lucky maybe?
