I don't know why but that made me chuckle
samuria

well you have to laugh at times...
though my polecat hob may think not
as he's off for the snip tuesday
horace

Many years ago my uncle used to catch live sparrows then knock them on the head just before feeding them to the ferrets

Seabird

Thought so, but in this area it could be true.
samuria

i am not a cat person, but would not go out of my way to hurt one, my dogs might though if it was stupid enough to come in my garden

ferrets

We have three males brothers, all have had the snip and not a mean bone in their little cunning bodies, they come when called lick our faces, play fight with us and want to be friends with everybody and everything, they have managed to escape several time but always came home the last time they went on a adventure I felt I had lost a child they have been with us for 7 years and going strong and we love them to bits.
samuria

do you work them? or just pets?
woody
bodger

I didn't realise it until I went over to America a few years back that its totally illegal to hunt with ferrets over there. They can still do lots of stuff that we can't do but definitely not ferreting.  Strange that isn't it ?
samuria

a oldboy i knew done a lot of trading to the yanks he would ship loads of ferrets
to them. they were the in pet to have....
woody

poorly ferret

Went to let the ferrets out into their run today and smokey just lay curled up in a little ball at the back of their hutch he seems lifeless, I held him in my arms for a bit and he just lay there looking at me with sad little eyes we will keep checking him every hour or so make sure he's comfortable the other two are fussing around him, we have had them for about 7 years and they have always had a outdoor play area with lots to satisfy their insatiable curiosity fingers crossed he is just having a off day.

Pets they are so soft not a mean bone in their little bodies they even made friends with a young blackbird who would sing to them and they would push kibble out to her and chirp and dance for her.
bodger

How did you go on with your poorly ferret ?
woody

Keeping regular checks to make sure he is comfortable I've given him my gardening jacket and one of my t shirts so he has the smell of me to comfort him, out the 3 he put on the least amount of fat this winter.
bodger

Seven years is a fair old score for a ferret Woody, you've done very well to keep them for as long as you have.

Cheers kind words bodger, im a pushover when it comes to the  ferrets they are like my babies they come when called by name and become little rascals if my back is turned for 2 mins.
samuria

as bodger said, 7 is a good age for a ferret. i have had a few live to 6 years.
thinking of the poor old hob. hope he pulls through ,,,,,,
woody

He is hanging in there will check him again at first light can't sleep for worrying
woody

Drama over checked him this AM and has perked up back to his old self we took him to the vet for a MOT and all was well, vet reckons he did not have enough winter fat store for the sudden temp.drop we had a few nights ago but my old jacket and thick Tshirt did the trick
samuria

nice to hear he's ok
have you a photo of him wearing your thick t-shirt and old jacket

Nice one I think the little bugger was duvet day cost us 21..thats coming out of his treat money
samuria

glad he's well. what do you feed them?
i came home today from taking the dogs out and found 12 pigeons on my doorstep still warm. some for us and the ferrets get the rest
bodger

Where vets are concerned, I doubt if many or any have any idea about ferrets or poultry.
horace

12 pigeons bonus or what
samuria

it sure was. just took the breasts off
and the rest was ferret grub,
so happy all round
woody

You may remember that our ferret smokie was a bit poorly and we took him to the vet, well he perked up for a bit but has now gone really thin and gone off his food he comes out in the run but just wobbles about then goes back to bed, Fi my partner said its cruel to let him continue but i cant bare the thought of taking on a last trip to the vet anyone got a thought on the what is the right or wrong thing to do.
horace

If he is suffering you know the right and only thing to do
samuria

woody... this sounds like pneumonia...
you said he was thin and no fat build up for the winter. sorry dont know whats best but i would try some fresh rabbit etc not dry food.
on the sad note its only fair for him not to suffer any more so its a oneway trip to the vet
woody

Thanks for the advice we will try him with some cooked chicken see how it goes but im not holding out much hope at this stage, "gutted" but i wont see him suffer, once again thank you.
samuria

dont give him cooked chicken...
it would be better raw....
Jaycee

If samuria's right and it's pneumonia take him to another vet and see if you can get some antibiotics for him.
If you have any left over amoxicillin/penicillin from a human script you can use that. This is suitable for respiratory diseases.
I could tell you the dosage for poultry but not for ferrets, you'll have to google it.
woody

Cheers for the advice guys will keep you updated.

Latest update on Smokey he looks like he has had enough not eating and now he has stopped drinking so im biting the bullet and taking the dreaded trip,It may have been selfish of me to leave him this long but he did not appear to be in distress or in pain but today he started to gasp so we have no choice but to do the right thing by him, Thank you all for your help and support.
samuria

sad to hear of poor smokey
but you have done the best thing for him. ferrets don't show much in the way of pain until its sometimes to late to do any thing for them.
you will now have to get another for company for his pal
woody

He left behind two brothers Cookie and Mr White, cookie came out on the run and was sniffing me all over then had a good route about not as chatty as he normally is, but Smokey passed really peacefully
Juli

I am sorry to hear about poor Smokey - giving him peace was the best thing you could give him.
