Metal spaghetti................

Some of you may remember J20s Skoda spat its timing belt off back in November?

Instead of scrapping it, I decided to keep hold of it in the hope that it could be repaired & sold on. It's been a cracking wee car, & it was the last thing Jo's grandfather bought her, so I'd like to give it a chance rather than consign it for scrap. Even if we sell it on for a few hundred pounds, it'll do someone perfectly as a first car, & I'd like to think a wee bit of effort on my part has done some good somewhere along the line.

I've been unable to get near the job due to the poor weather over the winter, but decided to start the work this week.

Any hopes I had of a quick & easy fix were dashed this afternoon though

One cylinder head: Removed! (Note the 'Persuader' at the bottom left of the picture?  )

But then I turned it over...................Sob!

A quick fettle with the VS compressor soon saw me the proud owner of a pile of junk

Wonder if I can hammer them back into true?

You can see where they've made contact with the pistons, too! Luckily though, there's no impact damage to the pots! Phew!

Never mind, hey? I'm sure if worse comes to worst I'll just stck a replacement head in & she'll soon be purring like a kitten again

Good job I enjoy tinkering, ain't it!?
horace

I think those are well and truly shafted
Woodsmoke

I think you just may be right, mate......................

And at around 12 apiece I reckon it'll be a replacement head right enough
sod

man they are a mess how fast was you going at the time
Woodsmoke

Wasn't me..................although Jo swears she was going 'really slowly behind a tractor'

They're a right mess, aren't they?
sod

slow in low gear high revs   maybe    what size motor is it
Woodsmoke

It's a wee 1.4 mate. The strange thing is, there seems to be absolutely no damage to the piston crowns. Kind of makes sense though, ifyou think about it? The pots have hemi-sperical recesses to clear the valves at the top of the stroke, & I guess when the belt failed the pistons hit the valves square on rather than at any angle. This was enough to buckle them without damaging the crowns themselves. S'pose the big end shells & the pins took a bit of an impact though................we'll find out when it's back together

Managed to track down 4 exhaust valves on fleabay for the princely sum of a tenner!

Only another 4 of each to find

Are the valve seats Ok? and the guides? be worth checking while the head's off.

That'll be a VW engine anyway won't it? if the worst comes to the worst there must a be a decent supply of scrappers to get an engine from - although they'll want silly money.
Woodsmoke

I was quoted between 250-350 over the weekend..................trouble is, any scrappie with a decent engine won't want to break it just for the head (understandably enough) Valve guides seem to be ok as the stems buckled at the exposed sections. Seats will need reground anyway, & that's not a hard job. I'll just need to hpe that I don't have to take too much metal away

It sheare the engine with the Polo. Just a case of keeping my eyes open fro a spare head. Not in any massive rush though
Woodsmoke

Starting to look a wee bit healthier now...................4 new inlet valves reseated, & 8 exhaust valves   Managed to source the valves online for around 7 each, as opposed to 21.76 that I was quoted from the main stealer (Parts mong: 'But these are genuine parts, Sir'...........Me: 'Who's going to see them in the middle of the bdooly engine?' )

Anyway, it looks a bit happier than it did this time last week..........

Exhaust valve seats were pretty scorched. Probably needing a cylinder head overhaul anyway...............they took a fair bit of reseating to get them nice & Gucci again!

Last 4 valves to go in, then the head can go back on the car & we'll see if there's any life left in her
sod

your doing a great job there hope it's a runner after all this
Woodsmoke

She breathes!!!!!

One rebuilt motor now purring like a kitten! First turn of the key & away she went

One Skoda Fabia Comfort for sale!
sod

Great news     your a champ
Woodsmoke

Thanks mate!

Must admit, hearing it fire up after all that work was really satisfying. Somebody's going to get a bargain
sod

My words were I was behind a row of cars behind a tractor   and the reason they are like that is because I kept turning the key   as I thought it was the alternator that had gone hmmmmm im sure you also said turn the ignition when I called you and then the AA guy did the same thing......
J20

Thanks thou for doing it I really appreciate it
sod

Woodsmoke thanks for the offer   but I think if it was free it would it too dear when it got here best it stays in its own country
