Lunar Eclipse

On saturday night we had a good view of the lunar eclipse. Couple of pics.

Thank you

But isn't the first shot of a solar eclipse, i.e. the moon in shadow between Earth and Sun - hence the illumination and Baily's Beads effect?

I did not take the pics but watched it in awe while eating outdoors on Saturday night.
YG you are right it is a solar eclipse for comparison.

I wonder in awe why the moon almost perfectly matches the size of the sun during a a solar eclipse and why the earth shadow matches the size of the moon in a lunar eclipse. Spooky or what ?

I think the size similarity is very fortunate but a mere coincidence, Welshboy.
It brings home the VASTNESS of space when you consider the differences in sizes of our Moon and the Sun.

This explains it better:- http://earthsky.org/space/coincidence-that-sun-and-moon-seem-same-size

And since the moon's orbit is slowly getting bigger in about half a billion years time total eclipses won't happen any more.
