Love is in the air

Pleased to report that Mr Blue our turkey stag who is coming up to 8 months was displaying himself to Miss white & Miss Red this morning who were running around him like crazy trying to chase each other off I think. He did try to mount one of them, but bless him he is a novice & I'm not sure if he succeeded, but full marks for effort. The girls are the same age so should be laying eggs soon. The incubator awaits
Rena

You should get some colourful babies!! Will they be table birds then? What breeds do you have? I have a Bourbon Red Tom (9 years old) and a Blue Slate/Narragansett hen that is approx 18 months. Hoping they'll produce some cute little poult peeps this year.

Ah - I see where you are coming from Rena, The blue, white & red just refer to their leg rings they are all Norfolk and don't really have names either.
bodger

I thought you were talking different breeds of turkeys too.

... Sorry. ... ... Thought you were speaking of feather colour. We don't have bands on our birds, although, my Tom is tagged in the wing with a yellow number tag (he was given to me with it already in).

Do you colour band for a reason? I used to leg band my chickens so that I knew how old they were for a culling schedule. Now they all just hang around and produce eggs for as long as they naturally live.

I've just got a Bourban Red stag Rena - he's 9 months old and HUGE - biggest turkey I have ever seen.  I have him in with 2 commercial girls with fingers crossed - I just hope he's not too big to mate.  I also have a Bourban Red hen but she was a late September hatch so probably nothing from her till next year.

Fingers crossed for your girls Carol and Rick

That's pretty exciting Debbie! I absolutely love my Tom! He is so gentle with the hens and a huge defender of my flock. You are right about the weight! Tom is about 45 lbs and solid. I hope yours proves to be every bit as sweet as mine has. My hen was a year when I originally got her and Tom and it took her another two spring seasons before she started laying. If you have any commercial breeding in her lines it may not take as long for your girl. Maybe post some photos sometime? (Great to see you back posting again! Sure have missed you!)

The only reason I colour coded was when we had a dozen running about we were able to identify which were the best looking and behaved to be selected for our breeding trio. I did also think that people having then at Xmas would like to pick out their bird in the field but people weren't that interested and just trusted me to select a bird. If the boot was on the other foot I'd have been visiting and looking for progress, but I guess that's just me,

Hope they do lay this year although I'm buying some double breasted eggs anyway to make sure we get poults, these three are more for fun now
Rena

Cool! I never thought about running the breeding selection for a trio using the leg bands... makes perfect sense!
