Livestock = deadstock

I've spent the last couple of days helping to nurse a mates old cow, but she died yesterday. So we've got a calf to rear now  She was 19 and I think she wasn't absorbing nutrient well and the calf dragged her down to a point where she couldn't recover.

Sad but the old girl sounds as though she didn't owe your mate anything.

First thing a farmer friend said to us when we started keeping hens back in Oxfordshire was when you keep livestock you'll get deadstock

So true

Thats a good old age for a cowstill calving isn't it, poor old girl bet she was well looked after.
Rena

That's a great age for a cow! Bet her body was just plum wore out. 19. Whew! So sorry she didn't make it. I hated losing our girls. Calves aren't too bad to raise.

19 is a fair old age to be still working. I wonder what the oldest cow on record to have calved is?
Rena

I was on a cow forum that had a member, if I remember correctly, with a 23 year old girl... (having had her last calf maybe about 19) and was still plodding along.
