Lining a chimney

Kaz and I have been looking at multi fuel stoves this last week or so and it would appear that before we have one, that we will have to have the chimney lined. The price of doing it, will be close on as expensive as purchasing the stove. The sales people in the show rooms all had pound signs in their eyes. has anyone got any experience of lining a chimney cheaply but safely ?

Have a word with your local chimney sweep -buy some stainless steel flexy multi fuel flue liner make sure its the right diameter to suit your chimney and chosen appliance. sweep will tell you if it will fit and he will  measure the length for you and  probably send it down the chimney  for you for a nominal fee.. you should be able to get it on the internet .

Thanks, I'll look into that

I suggested to you years ago to line the chimney with flexi pipe

If your chimney is sound there is probably no need to line it. Ask your sweep he will be able to tell you. The sales people in the showrooms always suggest that the chimneys are lined!

I was going to say you could pay him in Fowl but he is totally different to most just keeping a handfull .

We looked at using this particular chimney a few years ago, we lit some paper and leaves at the bottom of it and it drew really well. We were really chuffed until we went outside to admire the smoke. Smoke was coming out of the chimney OK but it was also coming out from under just about every slate in the roof. oh.gif  So yes ! I'm pretty sure that it needs lining.

It was also coming out from behind every wall light fitting in the room as well

Liner is about 15 per M. Add in the top & bottom fittings & an enameled stove pipe & it will be a quid or two.

Check prices on http://www.fluestore.com/index.php

Make sure you get one suitable for wood / solid fuel (IE double skined).

If doing it yourself (which is allowed) you need to comply with part P of the building regs.

Was reading this and thought Id ask if anyone knows where you can do a Hetas installer course?  Checked on various websites but they all seem to be booked well into 2009.
Anyone?

(Not for me, for OH)

I'm not sure what one of those is Lorraine but it sounds a good idea. When we went a few weeks ago to a couple of solid fuel heater showrooms, they were heaving. The price of energy has turned them into one of the few booming business sectors in the country. I hope you can sort one out for him, it should be a very good move.

Yep, we thought so.  we spoke to our local woodburner store who are keen to employ himon a selfemployed basis, (because their own guy is 'unreliable'.
OH put our other woodburner into the kitchen 3 yrs ago and is halfway through installing this mega expensive one with back boiler.  he knows what he is doing but (like all things) needs to get the paperwork.  we lookedon the HETAS siteand itappears that most of the courses re full into 2009.
But think we'll persevere with this.... letyou know

Bodger, if you peruse www.periodproperty.co.uk you will see that on the forum there has been quite a bit of debate about chimbley liners.

Chimney cameras

Sorry blatent plug here, we design and manufacture chimney cameras for sweeps/installers, so if anyone is thinking of going into the business or is already, have a look at our website www.amacengineeringltd.co.uk.

I will do a discount for anyone who orders from this forum, as we are a small family business and we know what its like when you are trying to get going.
