killing weeds ?

thistles , couch , mares tail, my allotment is full of them ,    I sprayed them 4 times last year , and I have to say I have killed a lot , but there are still a lot of new growth, and while I am taking time and cleaning the soil as go  there will be the inevitable few that come again , what I am wondering is does anyone think that taking some neat weedkiller and applying it the weed in question with a paint brush , that would kill the offending weed out to the root ?

We had mare's tail growing here when we moved in nearly thirty years ago. The Burgh are responsible for the long fence along side our garden at the gable which runs parallel to a nature walk and burn. Their workmen painted the fence with creosote, real creosote. They weren't particularly tidy about not getting it on the plants. The mare's tail disappeared and has never come back.

We used to buy a tube of weedkiller that was like grey jelly. A little dabbed onto the weed killed the whole plant right down to the roots.
I don't know if it'd be worth your while mixing your weedkiller with wallpaper paste ?
sod

Here we have things called 'weed wands' that are really just fancy way of doing what you say confused but I don't know if they mix stuff with water or use it full strangth or not.
polaris

We stocked up on real creosote before it went out and I have to agree it does wonders on the weeds but we're not too fussy about the grass and I wouldn't want to use it next to anything that was wanted alive!

Clinic Ace I find the best on the track, spayed once a year it keeps everything down, but in the fruit and veg patches it's still a flippin' hoe

You do know that all three can be eaten ?

Couch grass or Elmyus repens

Thistles, Johnny Jumbalaya has this to say about eating them

and Mare's Tail….equisetum arvense
https://recipesfromthewild.wordpress.com/wild-horse-tail/
can be made into tea, eaten, used to polish brass, turned into an organic fungicide/black spot killer (Treasure Island'll never be the same) and used to help heal broken bones.

Sorry about all the off-site links; I'm not sure how much I can import here yet.

For just targetting the odd weed a pal of mine swears by using the appropriate weedkiller mixed into wallpaper paste and either painting it on or using a rubber glove

I like this idea and i dont see it anymore time comsuming than pulling the weed  and risk breaking the root

Well i have listened to all your tips  (thank you all ) and i'm going down the wallpaper paste route ( no pun intended) it's been a time consuming job that will take a couple of years to come to fruition , but hopefully one day i will can look back and be proud , in the meantime i'm still at war the weeds !!
