Wind did 1ah total all month

The genny was on for 33 hours most of which was for running power tools (but would also be topping up the bats at the same time)

With our new reductions we are using less than 2kwh per day so on average we are just making what we need once system losses are accounted for. More importantly we would have only needed to run the genny for the bats twice for about 4 hours each time between 5th & 11th due to having to many low performance days in a row.

Thats fantastic Richard.
Any chance of a few pictures of your set up ?

Are there anythings that you would do differently a second time around ?

The biggest change would be to go for 24 or 48v & not 12v.

The reason being that the solar controller can only handle 80 charging amps. So thats about 1200w at 12v or 2400w at 24v & 4800w at 48v (forget 36v as not enough kit at that voltage).

The next biggest change that would actually make a difference is the site. We are not ideal as we are in the middle of a wood so full sun hours are limited.

Smaller gains could be made by having the array running East - West so they are angled due South. Also increase the angle to about 57 deg of tilt to capture more of the winter sun as its lower in the sky. The reason I dint do this is because they are mounted on a tin roof & the wind could rip them off.

This is the first 800watts

The controller dc fuses & breakers

Inverter

The site

These are the extra 400watts that have just been fitted

The frame work (25mm x 50mm cedar) nailed & PU foamed to the roof. Taking care to find the wooden batons in the roof this time so its stronger than the first 800watts that are just self tapped to the metal.

The installed panels. I have left a gap between them so I can clean them & it also means that the upgrade array does not shade the original ones till the sun is so low that the trees are blocking them any way.

They could do with being steeper still. The new section produces about 10% more pro rata than the original one due to the angle & slightly less shade in the late afternoon.

Planning on increasing the angle of the first 800watts to match the new section.

What you are doing is fantastic. The thought of being self sufficient and not dependant in anyway on the national grid is surely something that many of us would like to aspire to.
As someone who gets his Mrs to change the plugs in the house, its all seems far too technical for little me.
