James Herriot

I always watched that series about the vet James Herriot when I was young. Now it is is back in the telly in The Netherlands everyday during the week. It is still so nice to see it. But know I can see they really got into these animals if a cow had to be born etc.
MrsWW

I too used to love watching that series when I was a youngster
lilwitedogs

We are able to rent the DVDs here.  We've watched the first two seasons in order.  I just love them.  And yes, they did a good job with portraying the animals and treatment, didn't they?
kaz

I've still got the books
lilwitedogs

I've still got the books, too.

do you know that is really spooky.....OH has just bought several on ebay to replace damaged and lost ones.....
Seabird

Did you know.........

James Herriot was not his real name, which was, I think (without googlin') Eddie something.
I heard that he took the name James Herriot after Birmingham City's goalkeeper of that name because he just liked the name!!

Can't have been because of Birmingham City's football success!!

I've still got the books somewhere - they're a great 'pick me up' when you're feeling down. I know I've wept with laughter several times at the description of a drunken Siegfried cleaning his car windscreen at the races with a dead chicken.
debbie

His  name was Alf White.........don't know where he got James Herriot from.

Apparently the real Tristrim and Seigfreed were not best pleased initially at how they were portrayed in the books.

I loved and have all the books though
Lootus

If I feelling down like I am now I like to watch James Herriot even more. Maybe I should buy it on DVD and find books. I didn't know there were books.
Lootus

I understand that on the telly in The Netherlands is now serie 4. Tristan has just finished his job to become a vet again in the practice of James and Siegfried, that was last friday. Tomorrow that serie will go on.
I found out all 4 series are for sale in DVD in The Netherlands. I am thinking of buying them.
You know, if I feel down I also like to watch River Cottage serie, but only the first 3, the other ones have never been on the telly in The Netherlands.
If I see these series about England, it is very hard for me not to want to live in England.

When you feel down Lootus, just chat to your friends, Over the Gate. We are all here for each other.

I know exactly what you mean Lootus....when I feel down its christmas feel good films for me.  I have just finished watching scrooged, am moving on to Santa Clause the movie (yes the tackier the film the better) and if tackie doesn't work it will be miracle on 34th Street then if really desperate What a wonderful life or White Christmas ...the last two will reduce me to tears though which always makes me feel better

Sometimes you just need a pick or buck me up I think and escapism usually does it for most of us - it just depends on what it is for each person.........

Could go on this so will start a new thread
Lootus

O bollocks

Only the series 1, 3 and 4 are for sail on DVD, not 2...

I bought the first 3 series via internet. Number 2 and 3 will be here tomorrow and number 1 in 10 days. So that's a bit strange, I can't start tomorrow watching from the beginning, but never mind. Hopefully it will a bit cheer me up.
Lootus

I' ve got them, just seen serie number 1, really nice to see him coming as a youngster at the practice. Gave me a laugh. Watching serie 2 now, still no baby's born. Just saw that cricketmatch.

lilwitedogs

They sure sucked him in for that cricket match didn't they?  Poor fellow.  He didn't stand a chance. And Mrs Pumphrey's gardener was on the opposing team, too.

Kangaroodog

James Herriot was the name of a football umpire, I think, that he "borrowed" for his books.

I loooooooooved the books, read them, re-read them, and re-read them. Still got them on my "special books" shelf. Also loved the series of course.

Yesterday I saw James Herriot when that new Willy came working in stead of Tristan. I did laugh so much about his reading in books what is bad for your health... The faces of the other vets about not eating salt, not eating meat and not drinking...

James Herriot was indeed Alf White, and the pen name did come from a footie player.  His son now works in the original vet practice but not in the same premises which is now a fab little museum in Thirsk set up as a tribute to the man!  I knew an old vet who's work crossed his path on a few occasions and knew him to be a "normal" person-also an old farmer who remembers him as the "vitnry" when he was a boy on his father's farm.  Yorkshire's hero he was actually born in Glasgow!
We recently took our three to the museum for a day out-this year's holiday (and we had money off vouchers)!  Amazingly OH hadn't read or seen any of the books of films/TV but they set me on my current path so it was quite an emotional experience!  Kids had a great time as animal mad and lots of things for them to do.  Worth a visit if you are a fan and ever in North Yorks! Thirsk is a nice market town too!

The name "James Herriot" was indeed taken from a football player.
He was goal keeper for Birmingham City round about the mid 1960s, he was also an international player for Scotland.

He liked to blacken around his eyes and cheekbones with black boot polish, which he maintained, put the fear of god into the opposition

He certainly put the fear of god into us Birmingham City supporters!!!

One minute he could save a certain goal with a magical save and the next he could have butterfingers and drop the ball inside his own net.

Most Birmingham City supporters aged about ten years in 90 minutes at every game. Largely due to Mr James Herriot and his footballing exploits.

However, being a Birmingham City supporter does mean being of "strong stomach, and always being able to look on the bright side of life"
